Growth Through Discomfort: Paul

Growth Through Discomfort: Paul

What can the Apostle Paul teach me about persecution?

The Apostle Paul is such an interesting historical figure. He became one of the primary people led by the Holy Spirit to write so much of the New Testament. Before this, he was a deadly prosecutor of followers of Jesus. In Acts 9 we read about Jesus blinding Paul and told him to stop persecuting Him. Jesus then sent him on a mission. He had an extremely dramatic conversion to following Jesus and his life certainly never ceased being dramatic.

17 Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church. 18 When they came to him, he said to them, “You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and during the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 20 You know that I did not avoid proclaiming to you anything that was profitable or from teaching you publicly and from house to house. 21 I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.

22 “And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, compelled by the Spirit, not knowing what I will encounter there, 23 except that in every town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions are waiting for me. 24 But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.

Acts 20:17-24 CSB

How does Paul lead by example?

22 I remained personally unknown to the Judean churches that are in Christ. 23 They simply kept hearing, “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith he once tried to destroy.”

Galatians 1:22-23 CSB

Paul is one of my favorite people in scripture. He went boldly wherever the Lord called. The Apostle said what he needed to say, and did the work God led him to do. He was a bit harsh when it was necessary, and gentle in the right moments as well. He learned, by the Holy Spirit, to minister to different people groups in different circumstances. There is so much to learn about how to live as Christ and minister to the world around us. We should never have shame about our faith or the mission we have been given.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:16 CSB

One of my favorite things is that he led such a life of turmoil but understood that there was a purpose for all of it. Paul understood that his reward was not here, but was awaiting him in Heaven. He understood what it meant to be truly persecuted for the sake of Jesus. Even still, he kept sharing the Gospel and didn’t run from it. He embraced discomfort, pain, imprisonment. Paul kept on in his God-given mission. He kept trusting in the Lord to use his painful circumstances for His glory.

What does Apostle Paul teach us about discomfort

How did Paul respond when life was difficult?

Paul is an incredible example of growing through discomfort. He teaches us so much about placing Jesus as our reason, priority, and mission. He shows us the depths we should be willing to go through, the lengths we should be willing to travel. He exemplifies the pain we should be willing to endure to further the mission and truth of the Gospel. We are called to get uncomfortable so we can grow. That can’t be done if we stay in our little bubble of protection. We cannot grow in faith if we never act in faith, or only leap when it is convenient.

19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

Galatians 2:19-21 CSB

Paul says in Acts 20:24 “I consider my life as no value to myself;” - he understands his life belongs to the Lord. He goes on to say “my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.” Friends, fam in Christ, we all share this exact mission. God has given you a mission to testify to the gospel. Our shared mission is to share His Word. We should plant seeds of faith into as many hearts as He gives you the opportunity to. Our lives are not our own.

How can I grow spiritually when life is hard?

My life is the Lord's. I give myself over to Him every day, moment by moment. It's a choice to seek His guidance in whatever pains and joys He brings me through. I strive to serve, honor, glorify and testify every chance I get. I don’t always get it right, I never will, but I surrender again and again to His plan. He reminds me that His plans are bigger than me and I am blessed to be a part of them.

14 Do everything without grumbling and arguing, 15 so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, 16 by holding firm to the word of life. Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run or labor for nothing.

How can I stop making excuses?

Next time you read Paul’s letters take a look at how he gives his life over to be used for the Lord. Don't let pain, persecution, difficulty, or discomfort stop you. Don't put His plans on pause, or make excuses to avoid what God has called him to do.

7 Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, 8 because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.

Growth Through Discomfort: Ruth

Growth Through Discomfort: Ruth

Do Christians struggle?

I don't know about you, but one common misconception I hear about Christianity is that becoming a Christian means life is automatically easier. People seem to believe that it's like a switch that you flip and the troubles turn off. People often believe that you don't struggle anymore once you become a Christian. This common worldview is held by so many, but is not Biblical and therefore not true. The story of Ruth tackles this beautifully.

Christians still suffer. We still struggle. We still go through uncomfortable and even painful circumstances. Christianity is a way of life. It's a belief. Its faith in our Maker and Savior. What we experience is not about us. Our lives are about Jesus. We are called to follow, imitate, grow in relationship with, and likeness of Christ.

For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

1 Peter 2:21 CSB

Why do Christians struggle?

Christ suffered, therefore you can count on suffering as well. Suffering and discomfort are not things to avoid, though. Trials can teach us, grow our faith and reliance on Him, and lead us to become more like Christ all the time. Discomfort and even pain should draw us closer to the throne of God and the way He wants us to live and away from sin and selfish ambition.

Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.

3 And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:3-5 CSB

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.

Romans 8:18 CSB

Who is Ruth?

Scripture is filled with examples of people, just like you and me, who were plopped right smack into uncomfortable and even painful situations. Two such people were Naomi and Ruth. Naomi had lost her husband then her sons. She was left to fend for herself which was an incredible challenge and danger.

2 Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.

James 1:2-4 CSB

Naomi instructed Orpah and Ruth, her daughters-in-law, to go back home to their families. Ruth and Orpah would be taken care of if they went home to their families. This would leave Naomi completely on her own. Naomi, knowing this, willingly told these women to leave her behind to deal with the struggles of being a woman alone in Biblical times, thinking the Lord had turned against her.

11 But Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Am I able to have any more sons who could become your husbands? 12 Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me to have a husband tonight and to bear sons, 13 would you be willing to wait for them to grow up? Would you restrain yourselves from remarrying? No, my daughters, my life is much too bitter for you to share, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me.” Ruth 1:11-13 CSB

Doesn’t that sound so familiar?

How does Ruth encourage us in times of suffering?

It's easy to feel like God has turned on us when we’re faced with difficult and painful circumstances. This woman had already lost her husband, and now both of her sons are dead as well, and she thinks God has turned on her and becomes bitter. I can think of plenty of times in my life my mind went down this train of thought during a time of despair. It’s easy to be blinded by grief, pain, and discomfort and fall into bitterness.

The beautiful thing, though, is that no matter how we feel or what we think, God’s promises never change, never fail, and God is always faithful. We can rest in God’s truth. God reminds us that we are never alone and that painful circumstances are opportunities.

How is Ruth an example to us?

Naomi tells Ruth to leave her behind, but Ruth “clung to her” (v. 14). Again, Naomi feels so much like how I would likely respond - she tells her to go again, urging her to go make a better life for herself, but Ruth… Ruth stays. Not only does Ruth stay but she declares something incredible to her mother-in-law.

14 Again they wept loudly, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15 Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. Follow your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth replied: Don’t plead with me to abandon you or to return and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me, and do so severely, if anything but death separates you and me. Ruth 1:14-17 CSB

Ruth chooses a life of discomfort. She chooses to declare herself to Naomi, no matter the cost, even until death. Even more incredible, she leaves her people’s religion behind and chooses God, Yahweh, Naomi’s God, our God, the God of Israel. Ruth chose to change her entire life not knowing what may be ahead, but knowing it would be filled with hardship.

Ruth tackles her circumstances head on choosing the more difficult path because she knows it is right. She clearly understands what we miss so often - sometimes the hard thing and the right thing are the same thing. She doesn’t shy away, she heads toward it faithfully, boldly.

What should I do when life hurts?

May we have that kind of faith, that kind of boldness, that kind of dedication to God. May we be so committed to the way of the Lord that we are unafraid, unflinching, and choose to go full steam ahead wherever the Lord is leading. Trust Him to guide, carry, strengthen, provide and grow you through any circumstance. Trust in the Lord to keep His promises and to be with you always.

Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 CSB

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 CSB

Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 CSB

What is Biblical Love?

What is Biblical Love?

What is Biblical Love?

After explaining a variety of spiritual gifts Christians are given by the power of the Holy Spirit, Paul explains that no matter what gift you have been given if you use it without love it means nothing. No works, wonders, or faith means anything if it is not companioned with Biblical love as God calls on us to love.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 ESV

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 22:36-40 ESV

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34-35 ESV

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

1 John 4:7 ESV

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

John 14:15 ESV

How are we supposed to love?

We are called to love God and love people first and foremost, and we are also called to love our neighbor as ourselves, and love as God loves. We must know God’s definition of love in order to love others like He loves.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

How do we love?

When we love God we obey God, when we obey God we bear His fruit, and when we bear His fruit we love the way He loves us. Paul reminds the Corinthians, as well as all future generations of believers, that to love is to be patient, or long-suffering. It is loving to be kind, honest, and to bear with one another, hope for and share hope with one another, and endure with one another.

It is not loving to be selfish, arrogant, prideful, or rude. We are failing to love when we brag, envy, becoming irritable or resentful toward one another. We also fail to love when we act unrighteously or sinfully, which can show up in a lot of ways.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:8-13 ESV

What does Biblical love have to do with Spiritual gifts?

Paul recognizes that while these spiritual gifts are not eternal, love is eternal. We will not always need these gifts but without love we have nothing. We will always need love. During this lifetime we will only see and perceive a fraction of the wisdom and blessings of God.

When we see God face to face we will rest in His presence and full wisdom for eternity. This life is preparation for eternity, and in loving others we are planting seeds of God’s love to help draw more people to eternity with Him.

Let all that you do be done in love.

1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:8 ESV

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34-35 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:16-17 ESV

Faith enables us to trust in God, hope enables us to look forward to the promises of God, but love enables us to imitate God. As we grow in faith and hope we should be growing in and better imitating the love of God in our lives. If we are failing to display and live in the love of God, we are failing to be imitators of God, and therefore all we do, even if in the name of God, is useless.

What are Spiritual Gifts?

What are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts refer to the special endowments that the Holy Spirit bestows on believers to use for their callings and to benefit the Church as a whole. There are a variety of spiritual gifts named throughout scripture, and all are important to know and understand.

It is vital that we, as part of the Body of Christ, understand that everyone doesn’t have every gift and that each person will be given the gifts God knows they will need in order to do the work He calls each of us to do in this life. All gifts are given to us in order to be used to bring God honor and glory, add to and build up the Body of Christ, and serve God with a grateful heart.

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12:1-6 ESV

What does "spiritual gifts" mean?

Strong’s G4152 - pneumatikos - spiritual gifts: belonging to the Divine Spirit;

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 ESV

What are the Spiritual Gifts in the Bible?

While some of the spiritual gifts we find in scripture are widely believed to no longer be present in the lives of believers, most are still seen, used and experienced throughout the Church. There are differing beliefs about some gifts while some have beliefs in common. We should always lean on the Holy Spirit in order to discover and understand our own gifts as well as how we are each called to use them.

Where many of us will be blessed with some of the same gifts, the ways in which we are called to use them will be uniquely identified by the Lord using His Spirit as a guide throughout our life and the sanctification process. Being in His Word and in prayer about our gifts is also needed in order to constantly give God the reigns and let Him guide our path and usage of these incredible gifts He provides us with.

The Gift of Speaking in and interpreting tongues:

Speaking in and interpreting tongues is to be able to speak and understand foreign languages you have never learned. Early Christians on the Day of Pentecost were empowered by the Holy Spirit and given the ability to speak in tongues so that they could share the gospel with visitors from the Roman world in languages the visitors understood. Typically speaking in tongues is a means of special prayer from an individual to God. There are a variety of differing beliefs about this spiritual gift.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

Mark 16:17 ESV

For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God.

Acts 10:46a ESV

And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Acts 19:6 ESV

The Gift of Driving Out Evil Spirits:

Driving out evil spirits is to exorcise or cast out demons.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

Mark 16:17 ESV

But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Matthew 12:28 ESV

And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.

Matthew 8:28-32 ESV

The Gift of Healing:

Healing is divine healing from the Holy Spirit through incredible faith.

Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” —he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Mark 2:7-12 ESV

The Gift of Prophesy:

Some instances in scripture identify “prophecy” when speaking about all speaking gifts (1 Corinthians 14), but the unique gift of prophecy is a specific gift of the Holy Spirit inspiring a proclamation to a believer for the purpose of edifying the Church. This is commonly believed that there are no longer current-day prophets in the world, and there is much to learn throughout scripture about this gift.

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

Joel 2:28-29 ESV

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:21 ESV

The Gift of Divine Knowledge and Wisdom:

Divine knowledge is insight and perception from the Holy Spirit, while divine wisdom is the application of truth and knowledge guided by the Holy Spirit. All believers are called to live wisely, but some are blessed with extraordinary wisdom and knowledge from the Holy Spirit.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

James 1:5 ESV

The Gift of Serving and Hospitality:

Serving is an act of ministry characterized by a joy in doing things for others and hospitality is an unselfish desire to meet the needs of others without expectation of reward.

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 4:9-11 ESV

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 10:45 ESV

The Gift of Teaching:

Teaching is an instruction that can be understood. It can be recognized by understanding difficult matters and the ability to deliver instruction effectively.

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

Titus 2:1 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

2 Timothy 4:2 ESV

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16 ESV

The Gift of Exhorting:

Exhortation is persuasion and encouragement characterized by the ability to inspire and persuade.

So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the town and were coming to him.

John 4:28-30 ESV

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:

1 Peter 5:1 ESV

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

2 Timothy 4:2 ESV

The Gift of Giving:

Giving is to generously support and share what you have, and can be recognized by the joy in generosity and expecting nothing in return.

Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor.

Proverbs 14:21 ESV

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Acts 20:35 ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38 ESV

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV
Spiritual gifts in the Bible

The Gift of Leading:

Leadership is to be diligent, watchful, and willing to care for and labor for a people or thing. This gift of leadership in Greek means to “rule” or “govern”, indicating someone who is set over something or someone in order to provide care, guidance, and fellowship with a heart of diligent and sacrificial service.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

John 16:13 ESV

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Matthew 25:21 ESV

he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Romans 12:8 NKJV

The Gift of Mercy:

Mercy is tender sensitivity and can be identified as concern for others who are hurting.

Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:36 ESV

For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

James 2:13 ESV

The Gift of Extraordinary Faith:

Extraordinary faith is extreme optimism and confidence in the Lord and the ability to inspire others in extraordinary ways and circumstances.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV

And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Mark 11:22-24 ESV

The Gift of Discernment:

Discernment is the being guided by the Holy Spirit in all circumstances to make judgements, determine good or evil, and see beyond the surface.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2 ESV

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 ESV

The Gift of Evangelism:

Evangelism is the ability to witness, love people, talk easily, and rejoice in sharing the Lord in any situation.

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

1 Peter 3:15 ESV

As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Timothy 4:5 ESV

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 ESV

The Gift of Speaking:

Speaking is talking easily and inspiring others with words guided by the Holy Spirit.

A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Proverbs 29:11 ESV

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Proverb 15:4 ESV

But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

James 3:8-10 ESV

Who recieves Spiritual gifts?

All Christians are members of the Body of Christ, and each member is related to a part of the body as a whole. Each part of the body serves a unique and different function, but no one part of the body is any less important for the overall function and health of the whole body.

All are equally important roles but all serve the Body equally in the ways in which they are called, using the gifts in which God has given to each of us. We should not be envious or disgruntled toward any other part of the Body or their gifts, but instead encourage, honor, and care for all fellow members of the Body of Christ and be united together in our shared mission.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 12:12-31 ESV

How should Spiritual gifts be used?

The spiritual gifts which have been given by the Holy Spirit should not be used for self-gain but should be used humbly for the Kingdom of God and Body of Christ. We should be seeking after gifts that deepen our relationship with and sharing the gospel of Christ versus gifts that draw attention to ourselves. We are told to diligently seek these gifts but that “the most excellent way” was faith, hope, and love, love is the greatest of them all.

Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers. If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

1 Corinthians 14:20-25 ESV

As new believers, we are children in our faith and should intentionally be learning and growing in faith through dedicated time in scripture, prayer, and fellowship with God and His people. As we mature in faith, we mature in the way we think and the ways we understand and use all that God blesses us with. As we grow in maturity of faith we also become more mature in abstaining from sin, becoming better imitators of Christ, putting our spiritual gifts to work, building up the Body of Christ, and will also be better equipped to organically and intentionally plant the seeds of the gospel in the hearts of nonbelievers.

What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But all things should be done decently and in order.

1 Corinthians 14:26-40 ESV

Spiritual gifts should not be used for self-interest, self-development, or self-display but instead in accordance with the law of love that serves to build up others. The gifts God blesses us with are not our own but are His attributes bestowed upon us to be used for the furtherance of His will and Kingdom. We are not our own, and these gifts are not our own. We have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and these gifts are His for His purposes.

We should use discernment and be led by the Spirit, prayer and scripture in using our spiritual gifts to avoid corruption, competition, division, and pride within the Church. Paul explains that spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues, are not uncontrollable. We are given free will, therefore the Holy Spirit does not overpower you but gives you the choice to obey His promptings or not. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians that no one is exempt from accountability in how they use their spiritual gifts.

Each member of the Body of Christ is given their own set of spiritual gifts according to their specific callings, roles, and functions as their individual part of the body. Not all parts of the Body have all of or the same gifts, but instead, all are given the gifts which God knows are necessary for the work He has called them to do. Everyone is accountable for every gift given to them by God, and any claim to having a gift should be tested and filtered by the Word of God.

What are Angels?

What are Angels?

What does the world say about Angels?

Our world has many ideas and opinions about angels. According to CBS News in 2011, 8 in 10 American adults believe in angels, including non-religious people. According to ABC News in 2008, more than half of adults believe in some sort of guardian angel. Typically angels are described as the little cartoon depictions with wings and harps, and are believed to give some kind of divine message or protection to people on earth. Just like anything else, we should filter our understanding of angels through the Word of God to seek His truth on the matter.

What does scripture tell us about Angels?

Based on the Word of God we know that angels are created beings (Psalms 148:2-5) and are sent by God as messengers. We see many occasions in which God sent angels to earth to deliver messages to people or perform a specific task, such as when Gabriel came to Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38), and also when angels came to deal with the corruption of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19). The general purpose is always to declare and promote God’s will. Angels also interact with both man and beast, as we see in the case of Balaam’s donkey in Numbers 22.

Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD! For he commanded and they were created.

Psalms 148:2-5 ESV

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

Psalm 91:11 ESV

And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.

Luke 22:43 ESV

Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

1 Chronicles 21:27 ESV

Angels as Supernatural Beings

Angels are supernatural creations that dwell in the spiritual realms, praising and serving Jesus, whom they were created for and by. Because they dwell among the spiritual realms they are typically unseen by humans, but when they do show themselves by God's divine instruction their identity is often hidden from our understanding at the time so that we do not know when we "are entertaining angels." They obey the Lord and do the work He calls of them, and live to serve and worship God.

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Hebrews 13:2 ESV

Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea,

Revelation 7:2 ESV

And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."

Hebrews 1:6 ESV

I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Exodus 33:2 ESV

Angels in Creation

Scripture explains how God used Jesus in the creation process, and Colossians 1 explains that all things were created by, through, and for Jesus, on earth and in heaven, which would include the angels. By nature angels are typically holy, but there are also “fallen” angels such as Lucifer.

In scripture we see some named angels, Michael and Gabriel, and we see other potential angels such as various heavenly creatures, cherubim, and Nephilim, as well as a special kind of angel, the Angel of the Lord. Angels, unlike God, are not omnipotent, omnipresent, or omniscient. They only possess the abilities that God permits, and different types of angels seem to have different functions and purposes.

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Colossians 1:13-20 ESV

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."

Genesis 22:11 ESV

The cherubim appeared to have the form of a human hand under their wings.

Ezekiel 10:8 ESV

And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—

Jude 1:6 ESV

Angels and Judgement Day

Angels are supernatural, heavenly, created beings that were created by and for Christ before the creation of mankind, do not marry, and have greater power than humans, as we see throughout scripture. We also know that one day Christians will participate with Christ in the judgement of the angels on the Day of the Lord. We don't know what the means or looks like, but by this we can perceive that angels are held accountable to God as well as mankind as fellow creations of our Creator.

Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.

Revelation 8:2 ESV

For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

Mark 12:25 ESV

whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.

2 Peter 2:11 ESV

Then a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD, saying, ‘I will entice him.’

1 Kings 22:21 ESV

Types of Angels

There is much to behold about angels throughout Scripture, such as the different types and functions of angels, the specifically named angels, and even the Angel of the Lord. Knowing the basics is vital before diving into deeper knowledge about angels in order to grasp a better understanding of what God has revealed to us about these fellow creations.

How living in obedience can change your life for the better

How living in obedience can change your life for the better

There are many callings a follower of Christ may have in their life, but one, in particular, is shared between us all. This shared calling is so important, so special that we should all long to band together to tackle it with the utmost importance in our lives, and the utmost care to do it properly. We should have a true desire to grow in our wisdom and faith in order to ensure we're doing the best job we can and utilizing every bit of resource and knowledge available to us. We should be so filled with gratitude, awe, and unexplainable love that we can't help but press forward in this calling no matter what. This is the way each follower of Christ should approach obedience to the will of God.

“But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

Exodus 23:22 ESV

Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

1 John 3:24 ESV

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 5:3 ESV

Why am I called to be obedient to God?

The unfortunate truth is that we live in a fallen, broken, sinful world that is filled with temptation at every turn. This sinful lawlessness is deceptive yet alluring to our humanness. This sin separates us from God, but because of sin God sent Jesus Christ to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all mankind allowing those who choose to accept Him as their sacrifice to come into a relationship with God and no longer be separated from Him.

This salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus should fill us with such gratitude we can't help but love and trust the will of God, obey and worship Him, and go out into the world to tell others about His mercy and grace. Once we have received this incredible gift of salvation we are called to be witnesses in the world of what God has done for us, boldly putting our faith into action, in order to add to the Body of Christ and strengthen the faith of others.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.

Mark 16:15 ESV

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

John 20:21 ESV

And said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

How can I be obedient to God?

God calls on us to come to Him with a repentant heart and to atone, or be reconciled to God, through the forgiveness of our sins. This forgiveness is made available through accepting salvation offered by the blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. When we come to God in love, obediently bringing our sins to Him for forgiveness with a truly repentant heart, desiring to be in a right relationship with Him, and accept Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, we are then justified by faith, which comes from a heart of submissive obedience to the Lord.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

Justification is the process by which we are made right in the sight of God through saving faith in Christ Jesus. God loves and desires us to return to Him so much that He sent His Son to take our punishment and die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and be free from the power of sin and eternal separation from Him.

It is through Christ Jesus that we have salvation, and through the grace found in Christ Jesus that we are saved. There is only one mediator between us and God, only one way to heaven. His grace is not something that we can earn and can only be obtained through faith in Christ Jesus.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:1-2 ESV

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Timothy 2:5 ESV

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12 ESV

How do I live a life of obedience?

Obedience to God also includes the constant and mindful study of His Word. It is through His Word that we find help in times of trouble and encouragement when we are feeling low. His Word is alive and active, teaching, correcting, and speaking to us.

The Holy Spirit promises to bring to memory the lessons and messages we are taught and to guide our lives to be in obedience to God but we must learn to listen to Him. Learning to turn aside from our own understanding and lean into God to provide for all our needs is an act of obedience and one that strengthens our relationship with Him as well as causing our faith to grow exponentially.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 ESV

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24 ESV

Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

1 John 3:24 ESV

But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

Jeremiah 7:23 ESV

How does my relationship with God grow with my obedience?

Our relationship with God grows as we learn to come to Him in all things, through prayer, and work to align our hearts with His will. Scripture promises us that when we are aligned to the will of God that He will provide for the desires of our hearts. God is not a genie that we can simply ask for wishes and He will grant them. God does what He knows is best for us. While we can ask for all things, we need to understand that if God is saying no, or wait, it is because He knows what is best for us.

Learning to submit to God’s will is another form of obedience as we learn to cast aside the desires of our flesh and place God on the throne of our hearts, His rightful place. The peace that we receive is beyond human understanding, is not related to our circumstances, and can be obtained as we live in obedient faith.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

How does obedience apply to me?

Faith, hope, and love are at the heart of Christian values. We receive them from God and are called to continue to live in obedient faith by sharing God’s truth and blessings with the world.

Our relationship with God begins with faith, which helps us to recognize that we are freed from the sins of our past by Christ’s death and resurrection. Hope grows as we learn more about God’s love for us, that He has promised to be with us in all things, and that this life is not all there is.

We can rejoice in the fact that no matter the trials that come, nothing can separate us from the love of God when we place our faith and hope in Him. Jesus provided us with the greatest commandments of all time; the first is to love God with all our hearts, minds, and strength. The second is to love others as Christ has loved us.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17 ESV

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Romans 15:13 ESV

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:16-17 ESV

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:7-8 ESV

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34-35 ESV

Developing and growing our faith is an exercise of obedience that God calls for from all those who are known by His name. We must learn to listen to the Holy Spirit and to respond to the promptings that He provides which requires effort and intent. A personal relationship with God, through Christ our Savior, facilitated through the Holy Spirit is the only way in which we grow in obedience as faith is obtained through willful submission to God’s will.

How to live in obedience
Pin me for later!

Obedience is a personal choice

We cannot find obedience through the faith of our parents, our friends, or our church leaders. Faithful obedience is developed only through a willing heart and spirit to do as God commands. Faithful obedience is like a child submitting to the discipline of his father, not the actions of a slave submitting to his master. A slave does not know the coming and goings of his master nor does he understand the methods by which his master conducts his business.

When we submit to Christ, we are adopted into the family of God and become His children. God disciplines those He loves and when we accept that discipline with a willing heart we learn to be obedient in conforming to His will and are blessed. We will be disciplined in order to help us conform to the will of God and obtain His blessings, and we also will undergo trials and suffering that can test and grow our faith and obedience to His will.

Rejoicing in our sufferings does not mean that we celebrate the trials but rather that we can place our faith and hope in a saving God, one who promises to never leave or forsake us when we follow His commandments with obedience and trust. We can find hope in that God works all things to His glory and for those who love Him.

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Romans 5:3-5

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:2-4 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 ESV

Will life be easy if I am obedient?

Endurance, or “perseverance”, is the ability to continue on without giving up, remaining obedient to the call and command of our loving Heavenly Father. It does not mean that life will be trouble-free, but that through our obedient faith in God, He will continue to strengthen us for the trials we will face.

God is using the trials and attacks that we face in this life to create a stronger faith within us which deepens our relationship with Him and instills an even greater sense of hope for the future. The more we submit to Him and His will in faith and love, the deeper He can work within us.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:2-4 ESV

Character, also translated as “proof”, is used in the concept of the purification of metal. As the metal is heated, the impurities found within are brought to the surface and cast off causing the metal to become stronger. Self-discipline is necessary for perseverance, which leads to a change in habits, a transformation of character, and becoming more Christ-like.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9 ESV

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2 ESV

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV

How can I become more obedient?

Through the Holy Spirit, we are intimately connected with God at all times, we can receive revelation and guidance directly from Him through prayer and the reading of His Word. Prayer is our personal communication with God and through the Holy Spirit, we can receive revelation and understanding of God’s desires and will for our lives.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Redeemer, the Holy Spirit comes upon us to dwell in us, guiding and helping us throughout our life. When we don’t know what to pray for, or we lack the words to express ourselves, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with wordless groanings. Through the Holy Spirit, we are convicted of our sins, allowing for us to humble ourselves before Him and seek forgiveness.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:6-8

According to God’s plan, in His scheduled time Christ came, died, and was resurrected so that all people may be saved and reconciled to Him. Christ died for all people, but in order to receive that salvation, we must faithfully accept His sacrifice for our sins out of love and obedience to Him, fully intent on turning from our life of sin into the new life He gives us in Him.

Through faith in Christ, being justified before God, we are saved from the wrath of God. Jesus stepped in and took the punishment that we should have received. Through accepting the resurrection of Christ, we are also raised again - saved from the eternal separation from God that sin requires. Just as surely as Christ took our punishment, He has secured our future in heaven with God if we choose to accept Him in faith, love, and obedience to Him.

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Romans 10:9-10 ESV

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Romans 5:9-11 ESV

Jesus taught us through a parable just how our obedient faith works. In this parable, Jesus is the Vine and God the Father is the gardener. We become the branches that the gardener prunes in and out of season, preparing us to bear more fruit in abundance. We cannot bear fruit if we are not connected to the vine and branches, and those that do not produce good fruit are cut off and cast into the fire. Jesus concludes that when we keep His commandments the fruits of the Spirit will become evident in our lives. We are not saved because of our works, but our works are evidence of our saving faith and obedience to Him.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

John 15:1-6 ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV
Women of the Word: Redeemed Women

Women of the Word: Redeemed Women

What is redemption? This is easily one of the most challenging questions to answer, but the answer is also so incredibly simple. The entirety of scripture is God’s glorious story of the redemption of His people. When He created mankind, they quickly fell into temptation, became corrupted in sin, and God placed a curse on mankind as the consequences for their folly. Fortunately, He also has a plan to redeem His people and bring them back to Him.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

If God knew what was and is going to happen, why would He carry out His incredible plan? A simple answer is that while we have limited understanding He has infinite understanding and knows how to work all things together for the good of those who love Him. God knows the beginning and the end, He knows all of eternity, and wrote the whole thing - but there is one more very important detail: He gives us the free will to choose Him or not choose Him, and also provides that Way to that freedom.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:1-6 ESV

We have to choose the redemption and salvation He offers. He does not force it on anyone, but because He knows all of eternity, He also knows what we are going to choose and has planned ahead, knowing the choices we will make along the way. While He does not force us He does work in our lives to draw us into Him, revealing Himself to us in different ways, so that we may know Him and choose Him. Whatever we do choose, He works into His plan and nothing we could ever do could thwart His plans. He works all things out for the good of those who have been “called according to His purpose,” even the broken, sinful choices that mankind makes in their lives.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

So, if our choices don’t negate God’s plans, why should we care about His redemption? We are designed by Him, for Him, to be in relationship with Him, and before we are redeemed by the salvation of Jesus, we are separated from Him and enslaved by our sin. Through redemption we are set free from our sins and can be in a relationship with Him, reaping the benefits of being called by His name. Through this redemption, He offers we can enter into our rightful place as His children.

Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Titus 2:14 ESV

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ESV

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, Ephesians 1:7 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 ESV

I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you. Isaiah 44:22 ESV

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 ESV

So, what is redemption and how are we redeemed? Redemption is God choosing to deliver mankind from bondage to sin. God offers us the free gift of forgiveness when we come to Him with a pure heart of repentance, willful seeking to atone for the sins we have committed against Him, and accept the salvation He provided through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through repentance, we completely change our minds and turn away from our sinful way of life and seek atonement, or reconciliation, with our Heavenly Father. To break it down, repentance and willful atonement are required to receive God’s gift of forgiveness, and restoration and redemption are the results of God’s gift of forgiveness. Through all of this, we can come into a relationship with our Heavenly Father, who then gives us the gift of His Holy Spirit to teach and guide us in His will, and begin to reap the blessings of being in a right relationship with Him. We are freed from the guilt and power of sin in this life, allowing us to freely love and serve God, but we will not know the full power of His redemption until the resurrection of the dead.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. John 8:31-34 ESV

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 ESV

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:27-28 ESV

What is means to be redeemed
Pin me for later!

What should we do once we have accepted salvation and been redeemed by God? Once saved, we are called to live as Christ, to live a life of service to Him who has redeemed us, and to glorify and honor God in all our ways. God is the Creator of all living things, from the very beginning all the way through eternity. He created the human race, forming us as the potter forms the clay and when we are redeemed we are made new in Christ and completely transformed. We are called to always be learning and developing faith and trust in Him through fervent prayer, time in His Word, and fellowship with His people to grow in our knowledge of Him and the life He calls us to, and to grow and strengthen the Body of Christ.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 ESV

then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7 ESV

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 ESV

Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: Isaiah 42:5 ESV

God created and formed us to worship Him out of love for Him. He desires to draw us into a relationship with Him, meeting us where we are, sin, brokenness, and all. God provided the way to return to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ, and it is out of His love for each of us, even while knowing all of our sins and transgressions, that we are called back to Him to be redeemed and restored to our right place in relationship with our Heavenly Father. Once redeemed we are called by His name, being reborn as Children of God. Through His salvation we are made free, receive His Spirit, and can live as Christ in the new life and identity He has given us.

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 ESV

Since you were precious in My sight, You have been honored, And I have loved you; Therefore I will give men for you, And people for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your descendants from the east, And gather you from the west; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’ Bring My sons from afar, And My daughters from the ends of the earth— Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:4-7 NKJV

But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:4 ESV

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13 ESV

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. Ephesians 2:19 ESV

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1 ESV

Women of the Word: Doubtful Women

Women of the Word: Doubtful Women

Doubt is a dangerous thing. Doubt is not only doubting the existence of God, but also doubting His power, promises or presence. Doubt can creep in out of nowhere when we least expect it, and in ways we don’t recognize as doubt. I sometimes find myself stressing out, anxious, panicked, and crumbling and in these times I have realized I was not putting my shield of faith up to combat those pesky flaming arrows the enemy was launching my way and so many of them stuck, setting my doubts ablaze.

In preparing ourselves for the fight against doubt we must remember that we are all in the midst of spiritual warfare. Once you see this you begin to identify the flaming arrows of lies, folly and deception. The enemy and his tactics are very real; he is the king of lies and once you see that he is attempting to use your weaknesses to trap you it takes away his power and makes it easier to focus on God to help you fight back. It opens your eyes to see that you have a defense given to you by the King of Glory to combat these attacks and the doubt that it brings.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:10-13 ESV

In scripture, we are described as “double-minded” when we face doubts, which we see James explain as someone who doubts and is “unstable in all his ways”. James not only bluntly explains doubt but also that drawing near to God is how we combat doubt. Through seeking God and rededicating our whole self to Him we equip ourselves against this doubt and make our way back to Him and His truth.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8 ESV

Strong’s G1374 - dipsychos:

  1. double minded
  2. wavering, uncertain, doubting
  3. divided in interest

There are several key ways to draw near to God and commit ourselves to him again and again. Through prayer we have a direct line of communication with Him, and through His Word we get to learn more about Him and His will, and He equips us with the wisdom and strength we need.

Pray without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4 ESV

What the enemy also wants us to miss is the importance of edification, fellowship and discipleship. Through these tools that God provides for us we can stand against doubt, shoulder to shoulder with fellow believers as we work together to combat the attacks of the Adversary.

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:14-20 ESV

Prayer

Prayer is personal, heartfelt communication with God. It is not getting God to do whatever we want Him to do, but asking Him to do whatever He has planned, to help us through all trials and tribulations in this fallen world, and praise Him for all that He does and will do for us. Praise is prayers of gratitude to Him and can remind us of all that He has already done for us, reminding us there is no reason to doubt Him and His faithfulness. Praying to God in times of suffering is vital to keep the communication and connection going with God. When you are not praying, you are not connecting with God. When you are not connecting with God, you create room for doubt to come in.

There are two different types of God’s will. The unconditional will of God is when God will do what He knows is right no matter what. The conditional will of God is when God waits for human involvement, cooperation or response toward His desires and design. We never know if we are facing a conditional or unconditional will of God, and we must pray at all times so that we may communicate with God about things we want Him to change on earth if it is His will. Being in constant communication with Him through prayer helps us align with and accept whatever His will is for us, conditional or unconditional.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 ESV

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:13-16

Answers to prayers don’t often come in the ways we anticipate, and we must remember that God is in control even when we don’t understand the circumstances, answers to our prayers, or what seems like a lack of answers to our prayers. We should remember to pray for God to help us align with His will and plans, and to help us accept and obey whatever His will is for us even if it doesn’t make sense.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:6 ESV

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Matthew 14:28-32 ESV

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26 ESV

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 ESV

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Hebrews 13:15 ESV

With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. Psalm 109:30 ESV

Fellowship & Discipleship

Fellowship and discipleship both play pivotal roles in the lives of all Christians. God created us for relationships, and being in relationship with fellow believers helps us to build a stronger defense against the tactics of the enemy. Fellowship is essentially to be in relationship with fellow believers, doing life and growing in faith with one another, while discipleship is often more of a mentorship relationship between those who are newer in faith and those who are more mature in their faith in order to help one another grow on a deeper level. Both are designed to help all Christians grow in faith, edify one another, encourage one another in faith, life and prayer, and should help bring us closer in relationship to the Father through our relationships with His people, rightly prioritizing God in all aspects of our lives.

In English we may say fellowship or friendship but in the original Greek, koinōnia refers to the concept of communion or fellowship. This is an active, ongoing relationship between those who share similar beliefs.

Strong's G2842 - koinōnia - fellowship, association, community, communion, joint participation

Fellowship can happen in lots of ways and is not limited to the corporate gathering of believers within a church building. While the purpose for gathering together to worship is to unite followers of Jesus in Biblical beliefs we should fellowship within our church, but should also have fellowship in our day-to-day lives where we spend most of our time as well. Some examples being with close friends, family, and within our hobbies and gaming communities. Surrounding ourselves with others that believe and affirm Biblical teachings allows for a defense to be raised around those who are in an earlier stage of faith by providing strong relationships with those who are more grounded in their faith. As fellowship grows, the stage is set for discipleship to begin.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 ESV

Discipling is when someone with a more mature faith personally comes alongside someone who has less experience or understanding in their faith. Discipleship can also happen in a lot of ways, but is certainly a different kind of relationship than fellowship. Discipleship should definitely stem from some kind of a fellowship relationship and blossom into a God-guided mentor style relationship in order to further edify people in God’s truth and love. The purpose for discipleship is for members of the Body of Christ to be trained up in the Word of God so that we are better prepared for going out and making more disciples. The more personally invested we are in a discipleship relationship, the better equipped new disciples are likely to be when going out to add to the Body of Christ themselves. If we do not personally invest in disciple relationships we are at risk of sending people out ill equipped for the spiritual battlefield that awaits us all.

In English we may use the word mentor but in the Greek, mathētēs is used over 200 times to describe a disciple. A disciple isn’t just one that follows another, but rather one that is in a perpetual state of learning from another. Disciple is the only name for Christ's followers in the Gospels. In Acts, after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, disciples are those who confess Him as the Messiah. It was in Antioch that the phrase “Christian” or “little Christ” came about.

Strong's G3101 - mathētēs - a learner, pupil, disciple

And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. Acts 11:26b ESV

To be a Christian means that you are a disciple of Christ Jesus, dedicated to learning about and following His teachings and ways. It is the responsibility of all members of the Body of Christ to be constantly learning about and to teach others about the Gospel of Jesus. We do this first through fellowship, and then more personally through discipleship. Discipleship within the Church includes fellowshipping with other believers, but fellowshipping does not foster discipleship without intent and effort. Relationships must be developed and nurtured in a discipleship role as personally invested relationships are needed in order to fulfill the calling of discipleship.

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. John 12:26 ESV

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

Age is not always applicable in discipling. While we can generalize that older generations are life mentors to the younger generations the same cannot always be said about faith mentoring. Maturity of faith is the requirement and age does not dictate that. Christian tenure does not automatically make someone qualified for the teaching position of Discipler. A discipler must possess a solid understanding of Biblical teachings and what the Gospel is as well as what it is not in order to combat false teachings and doubt, and to more effectively edify and encourage those they are discipling to.

Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. Proverbs 10:17 ESV

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 ESV

As the Body of Christ we all have a responsibility to come up alongside others to lift up and exhort fellow Christians. We are all at various stages of our faith journey and should recognize when God calls on us to fellowship or to discipleship with those in our lives, allowing God to guide us every step of the way in these relationships. We should constantly seek to be edified in our faith and wisdom of the Word so that we can share what we learn with those God calls us to disciple to.

Edification

All members of the Church are commanded to speak the Good News of the Gospel to all people, but not all members are at a level of knowledge and understanding in the faith to teach someone. That is why we should seek constant edification by being constantly in the Word and working on our own faith.

We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:1-6 NKJV

Strong’s G3619 - oikodomē - (the act of) building, building up

  1. metaph. edifying, edification
  2. the act of one who promotes another's growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, holiness
  3. a building (i.e. the thing built, edifice)

Through avenues of fellowship and discipleship, God develops faith and endurance while providing edification and support. Edification, while it is done in our personal relationship with Christ Jesus, is a tool that God uses in order to build up all members of the Body in order to endure and persevere through all seasons of life according to the will of God.

For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. Hebrews 10:36 ESV

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 ESV

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4 ESV

Edification is to help us grow in Biblical wisdom and learn to test and filter all things through the Word of God in order to rightly handle Scripture and apply it to our lives and share it with others. By failing to test and filter all things through God’s Word, and falling into false teachings, we risk falling away from Truth itself and therefore away from God and the life He calls us to live. (Read more) If we are not in a constant state of personal edification with a heart open to God’s will, guidance and correction we are in danger of not rightly handling or sharing the Word of God, failing in discipling, and not only falling into but leading others into doubt.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:24 KJV

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 ESV

Prior to taking on a discipling role, someone must first ensure that it is God’s calling for them and not a self-centered desire. Through discipling, the relationship between mentor and mentee becomes stronger, and tougher questions can be brought to the surface, studied and answered. Always filter teachings through the Bible, being able to cite and quote scripture that establishes Biblical teaching versus teaching based on personal opinions or convictions. Discipling starts with the basics and as faith grows, so too do the studies and discussions. A solid foundation of what the Gospel is and is not is fundamental in a new Christian’s development but should not stop there.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 ESV

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 ESV

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, John 5:39 ESV

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 ESV

Conclusion

In developing a strong, personal prayer life, study habits and fellowship we can prepare ourselves for effective discipleship. Through all of these callings we share we can be edified in the Word of God and in relationship with fellow Christians, better equipping us all to combat doubt that springs up throughout our lives. We were designed for relationship, both with our Heavenly Father and also with His people, and there is immense importance in all of it. We are stronger when we lean on Him and the people He brings into our lives for these necessary relationships.

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3 ESV

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:2 ESV

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 ESV

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 ESV

Identifying False Teachings

Identifying False Teachings

The world we live in teaches many things. Lessons of our culture are vastly different from biblical teachings and it can be extremely challenging for Christians to discern between true and false teaching. Scripture addresses this challenge head-on in many places and gives us sound guidance on how to identify and combat false teachings. This discernment is an essential part of growing in our relationship with God, our resemblance to Christ, and our faith in God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Studying scripture should be a priority in the daily life of all followers of Jesus. We need to be in God’s Word regularly in order to learn more about Him, His salvation, as well as to better understand and apply what we are called to in this life. The Bible tells us to “correctly handle the word of truth” and to “meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.” How can we obey it or correctly handle it correctly if we are not earnestly studying it with a heart of edification and growth?

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua 1:8 ESV

One reason earnest and constant study is so essential is so that we can discern the difference between worldly teachings and Godly teachings. This is a vital yet challenging feat in today’s world and is not only for our own edification but also to help us grow the Body of Christ in how God calls. God places each person in their roles in this life for the whole Body of Christ to function properly and grow in Christ. We should be growing in wisdom, not remaining as children in God’s Word; we must continue to grow in the depths in which we dive into God’s Word to continue to learn and grow in it and discern what it is saying without going too far beyond what is written in the text. Learning the difference between scriptural fact and speculations, and understanding how to apply His wisdom and revelations to ourselves as well as to share and teach it to others in His way and will is a key part of studying God’s Word that often gets missed.

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV

When studying God’s Word, diving in deeper, and striving to learn and apply all that God reveals to us, we should be filtering everything through His Word and be learning more about the world, this life, and how He calls us to live based on what He teaches us. One key purpose for this learning is to identify false teachings, which can be found in every day relationships and encounters, churches and church leaders, theological scholars, Bible teachers, and outside doctrines. They are often hard to identify and while we should not be quick to write someone or something off as either a true or false teaching we should diligently filter everything through the Word of God to let the Holy Spirit advise.

How can we identify false teachings?

Some ways to help us filter and identify different teachings and teachers through the Word of God is to ask a few different questions and look at the teachings through a Biblical lens. Again, we must be careful not to jump too quickly to either approve or disapprove of a teacher or teaching as true or false. We must be diligent in letting the Holy Spirit guide us through the filtering process.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

1 John 4:1-6 ESV

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

2 Peter 2:1-3 ESV

Does the teaching contradict the Word of God?

Any teachings that deviate from salvation coming from faith in Christ alone is absolutely false and dangerous teaching. The foundation of the Christian faith is built on Christ and the salvation He died and was resurrected to provide all people with if they choose to accept Him and His works. Beyond this, we must ensure all teachings are in alignment with the Word of God and not left up to personal speculations or reading too far past what is written in scripture.

We should dive into the text by exploring the original languages, the culture of the times, and the context of what is written, but with the understanding that there is still much that we are not meant to fully understand without the discernment of the Holy Spirit or even until we can ask God face to face. If something is being taught or presented as being from scripture but it is not written in the text of scripture we should be careful to filter it as speculation or even personal revelation.

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” '

Romans 10:13 ESV

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Timothy 2:5 ESV

Is scripture being used in the teachings?

If scripture is cherry-picked and taken out of context, or even completely void in the conversation with an emphasis placed on personal revelation, this is a clear indication that the teaching is unbiblical. There must be scripture being taught, and being taught correctly, for it to be biblical.

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Hebrews 13:7 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16 ESV

Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

Matthew 24:23-24 ESV

Does the teaching downplay sin and judgement?

Sin is disobedience to God and His Word. Scripture identifies many areas we are called to refrain from, as well as many we are called to abide in. Any teaching that fails to acknowledge what sin is, and that sin is sin, is unbiblical. Scripture tells us that we all sin, but that Christ died and rose again to save us from the eternal consequences of our sin if we accept Him in faith.

Again, though, if the eternal consequences for sin are not being taught, it is unbiblical. There are very real consequences for sin as we see throughout scripture, and if we fail to repent, seek God’s forgiveness and accept Christ’s salvation then we are told in God’s Word that the consequences are eternal separation from our Heavenly Father.

God is the source of all goodness, love, mercy, and grace so if we are eternally separated from Him we are eternally separated from all goodness, love, mercy, and grace as well. We should be striving to understand the reality of sin and the consequences of intentionally remaining in our sin.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Romans 5:12 ESV

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23 ESV

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

James 4:17 ESV

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

1 John 3:4 ESV

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 1:8-10 ESV

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 ESV

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Does the teaching seek to deny human desires?

One of the tenants of the Christian faith is that as we follow Christ we are to become more like Christ. He humbled Himself from deity to servant, fully committed to God’s will even at the cost of His life, having died on the cross for our sakes. Any failure to teach that we likewise are called to the same humble, servant attitude is unbiblical and will likely cause us to fall into the temptations of our human desires rather than to become more like Christ. The only way for us to understand the depths of servitude and how to deny human desires is to be in the Word of God and applying the wisdom that He reveals to us daily.

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Luke 9:23 ESV

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 ESV

For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

Hebrews 10:26-27 ESV

He must increase, but I must decrease.”

John 3:30 ESV

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Matthew 16:25 ESV

This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority.

2 Peter 2:10a NIV

Does the teaching emphasize wealth, status, or position?

This may be one of the most challenging questions to answer in the American culture as our nation teaches very different lessons than what is taught in God’s Word. The hard-line is when we see it taught that prosperity comes from wealth, power, good health, and status. Our culture tells us that to be prosperous is to have a full bank account, lots of cool material things, popularity, and influence.

God’s Word, on the other hand, paints a very different picture. Scripture tells us that prosperity comes from obedience to God, and endurance that leads to perseverance and the building of your character in becoming more like Christ. Through spending time with God in His Word and in prayer we learn that the true definition of success and prosperity comes from Him rather than from the world or anything from the world.

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 ESV

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 John 2:15 ESV

So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:33 ESV

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Luke 16:13 ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38 ESV

Is health or poverty being taught as signs of faith or sin?

Any teaching that says that you deserve illness or poverty because of sin or lack of faith is completely unbiblical. Counter, any teaching that says that good health, wealth, or status is because you are sinless and earned it is likewise unbiblical. We know through the Word of God that as Christians we will suffer, struggle, and face great difficulties in many ways throughout life.

Where financial security and perfect health may be an incredible blessing from God, they are not a sign of perfect faith or salvation. Throughout scripture, we are told that when we suffer, struggle, and face trials and trouble in this life that Christ will help us, strengthen us, walk with us, and even carry us through it all.

The suffering, trials, and tribulations that we endure are to strengthen and test our faith, producing perseverance, character, and hope. So, believing that trouble-free, perfect health, wealth-filled life is a sign of true faith is unbiblical.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:2-4 ESV

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33 ESV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Romans 5:3-5 ESV

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

1 Peter 4:12-19 ESV

Is it taught that you will receive anything you pray for?

Any teaching that claims faith entitles us to material wealth, a clean bill of health, or anything else in this life and that we will receive whatever we want by asking for it in prayer is unbiblical. Scripture clearly states that when our heart’s desire is for God and His will that He will give us whatever we ask for in prayer because we are aligned with Him and His desires.

Our prayers are not to be demands for our own desires, but to help us align our hearts better with God and His will. Prayer should be in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and is intended to be our means of direct communication with our Heavenly Father, through the power of Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer should be lifted to God out of faith and love for who He is and what He has done and will continue to do for us, in His will, that is always superior to our desires for ourselves.

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

John 15:7 ESV

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

James 4:3 ESV

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26 ESV

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Matthew 6:7 ESV

Does it teach that you can earn salvation?

One of the most dangerous teachings is that salvation is found in anything of the world, that we can earn our way into Heaven in any way we want or think is right for us, and that whatever you believe for you is good for you, and whatever I believe for me is good for me.

Any teaching that says salvation can be bought, or even earned by our deeds, is dangerously unbiblical. Salvation comes from one source, and that is through the acceptance of and faith in Christ, His death and resurrection on the cross, and coming to Him with a repentant heart to seek the Father’s forgiveness, and henceforth receive the Holy Spirit to dwell in and guide us throughout our daily life. Any teaching that detracts from this is flat-out false.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5 ESV

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 ESV

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 ESV

Does the teaching apply universally to all people?

The Gospel of Jesus is relevant to all people throughout the world, throughout time. It is timeless, limitless, and excludes no one from its power and truth. God is the Creator of all people, is God of all people, and sent His Son to save all people, even those who do not yet know Him or do not accept Him.

All of scripture is breathed out by God, profitable for our edification, and holds truth and relevance that should be applied to all people. If anything being taught contradicts God’s universal truth, it is unbiblical. If anything takes away from the glory and supremacy of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it is unbiblical.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6 ESV

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:26 ESV

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23 ESV

They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.

Psalm 53:3 ESV

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 ESV

Conclusion:

Identifying false teachers is an incredible challenge and is a task that should never be done lightly, but diligently, with the help of God’s divine guidance through His Spirit. We can rest in the power of Christ to help us through any difficulty we face in life, including the discernment needed when striving to learn and understand biblical truth.

God encourages us to ask questions, seek to understand His Word, and seek His truth above all, no matter what. If we seek His truth diligently, fully intent, and open to accepting whatever revelations He provides, He will reveal to us whatever He knows is right and good for us. We, in faith, must trust in His guidance and truth and apply it to ourselves, and be unashamed to share His truth in love to grow and edify the Body of Christ for the glory of God.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Matthew 7:7 ESV

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:16 ESV

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20 ESV

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

Jeremiah 23:16-17 ESV

Women of the Word: Grateful Women

Women of the Word: Grateful Women

Throughout scripture we see some amazing examples of faithful gratitude from both men and women. Gratitude is an often overlooked quality, and when looking at these wonderful examples it is easy to feel like their gratitude is extraordinary and unrealistic. God calls on us, though, to express and display gratefulness to Him in all things and we are told that through Christ all things are possible. In order to be filled with extraordinary gratitude for Him we must cling to Him, recognizing His works, and remember He is God, He is in control, and He keeps His promises. We have a God who provides all He knows that we need, even going so far as to send His Son to die so that we may be forgiven of our sins and saved from eternal separation from Him. From this massive act He has done for us all the way down to the very breath we breathe and the beat of our hearts, we have so much to be grateful to Him for.

I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:10-13 ESV

What is biblical gratitude?

Zondervan’s Bible Dictionary defines gratitude as the “condition or quality of being grateful; an emotion or sentiment of thankfulness.” It then goes on to explain that nothing “more adequately recalls the nature of biblical faith than gratitude or thanksgiving.” In our study on Faithful Women we dove into what biblical faith looks like, and many examples of faithfulness in scripture. When we look at the Hebrew words, yadah (Strong’s H3034) which translates “to praise” and “to confess” and towdah (Strong’s H8426) which translates to “thanksgiving”, we can dive into the true nature of biblical thanksgiving, why we need it, and how it relates to our faith.

And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she ceased bearing. Genesis 29:35 ESV

“For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 2 Samuel 22:50 ESV

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 1 Chronicles 16:8 ESV

that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever! Psalm 30:12 ESV

Throughout the Old Testament we see constant themes of thanksgiving, such as David, Daniel, Solomon and Hezekiah all giving thanks and praising the Lord in varying circumstances, as well as Israel’s gratitude to God. They set an incredible example for us that no matter what we face in life God is worthy of praising, thanking, and worshiping. There are a multitude of reasons to be grateful to God and there is no shortage of examples throughout the New Testament as well.

Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 1 Corinthians 14:16 ESV

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. Psalm 43:5 ESV

While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice. He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word and understand the vision. Daniel 9:20-23 ESV

Why should we be grateful to God?

God is the reason we have life, and He provides everything that we have, down to the very molecules we are made of, the air we breath, the blood in our veins. He wakes us up in the morning, makes us sleep at night, and carries us through every day’s events. He provides what He knows is needed, right, and good even before we know we need it or when we have no idea what we really need. We should be thankful for His works, provisions, as well as for who He is to us.

Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Luke 17:15-16 ESV

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. Ephesians 5:4

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 ESV

Not only are we commanded to praise and thank God, but it is pleasing to Him when we do so. Pleasing God who does so much to care for us is the least we can do as a sign of appreciation for the magnitude of His presence in our lives. We also see Christ set the example for us, the Son of God Himself praying to God the Father, thanking Him, praising Him, worshiping Him and if Jesus is praising God, how much more should we?

It is good to give thanks to the Lord , to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord , have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. Psalm 92:1-4 ESV

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:14-15 ESV

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:5-7 ESV

Christ sets an amazing example for us in that even as the Son of God, God in the flesh, He gave thanks to God the Father in daily things as well as in extreme circumstances. He also commanded His followers to likewise give thanks. He exemplifies how to graciously lift thanks for our Heavenly Father in all things.

At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Matthew 11:25-26 ESV

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Matthew 26:26-29

Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. John 6:11 ESV

We even see that the creatures in Heaven worship and praise God, and that we, too, will praise Him in eternity with full and grateful hearts. This is the hope to come, that we will get to rest in His eternal presence and express our love and gratitude for all He has and will do for us in life and after. Again, if even the creatures of Heaven praise God, how much more should we?

And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Revelation 4:8-11 ESV

How to be grateful

What should we be grateful for?

Sometimes it is difficult to see what we have to be grateful for in the first place. This season we are all in is a great example of that. Our world, nation, communities and households are filled with uncertainties, stress and anxiety, sickness, danger, hostility and a growing sense of anarchy. No matter which way you look at it, the world is getting very dark and that can feel awfully suffocating. We are in a time that feels like there is less and less to be grateful for, but honestly there is even more to be grateful for. We have an opportunity to be reminded of where our trust should rest, where our hope comes from, and who promises to provide and protect.

Praise the Lord ! Oh give thanks to the Lord , for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1 ESV

God is always good, merciful and filled with grace. It is through His goodness, mercy and grace that we are here and have the gift and opportunity to come to Him and be saved by the blood of Jesus. Christ died to bring us into a true salvation relationship with God so that we could be saved from the fate of eternal separation from God, and therefore eternal separation from all that is good and love. Our faith in the Lord is made firm through our acceptance of the blood of Jesus that was spilled for us. We then get to receive the Holy Spirit as a guide in this life in order to become more like Christ, and bring others into a saving faith relationship with Him as well to share in these many gifts and blessings.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! 2 Corinthians 9:10-15 ESV

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. Revelation 11:17 ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV

Not only did God offer a perfect and unimaginable means for us to come into relationship with Him, but He then includes us in His plans to bring others into this relationship with Him as well. He chooses to use sinners like us for His perfect plan. We are called to share His truth, love and light throughout the world to penetrate the growing sense of darkness that is running rampant. He is unfathomably generous and merciful toward us and calls on us to be generous with others in the sharing of blessings we receive, as well as the truth, light and love He instills in us to display our gratitude for Him. God literally provides everything we have, and does so that we may be generous with those He places in our lives as an act of praise and worship to Him. This is not just material or financial provisions, but spiritual, mental, and physical as well. He knows all of our needs even better than we do. He has our whole future laid out before us, goes before us, and prepares the way for us. He has already solved all the problems and we are just catching up to Him. That is absolutely worth praising! We don’t have to worry because He is in control and is holding it all in His hands, working it all out for the good of those who love Him. Gratitude doesn’t even touch what we should feel and express in response to this level of provision.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. Romans 14:6-7 ESV

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Matthew 6:31-32 ESV

God calls on us to serve Him by serving people. He grants us with wisdom, strength and anything else we need in order to serve Him in the ways He calls each of us to. He appoints and trains up leaders, and puts each member of the Body of Christ in its place, creating balance and unity so that each part is doing their equally vital role, strengthening and adding to His Kingdom. The fact He uses us to serve Him is mind-blowing but so worthy of praise. He chooses to use those who are not even worthy of the salvation He made such sacrifice to provide in order to bring more people into that same salvation relationship.

To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king’s matter.” Daniel 2:23 ESV

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:4-9

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 ESV

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13 ESV

We have so much to be thankful for, and so many incredible examples of faithful gratitude throughout God’s Word. Expressing gratitude in all circumstances is an essential part of growing faith in Him. As we grow in gratitude we develop into the character of the Bride of Christ God calls on us to become (read more).

Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” Revelation 19:7-9 ESV

giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:20-21 ESV

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26 ESV

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17 ESV

God does not call on us to work at it alone, but provides His Holy Spirit to guide us, change us, and fill us up with His fruit and produce the heart He longs for us to have toward Him as well as toward all of His creation and plan. We certainly don’t always know what is ahead, but we can rest assured and be grateful that He is working ahead of us, He is in control, and He is always good and trustworthy.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26 ESV

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26 ESV

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. Ezekiel 36:26-27 ESV

Women of the Word: Leading Women

Women of the Word: Leading Women

Reading and studying the Word of God should be a priority in the lives of all Christians. In fact, it is something every person should do in order to discern what is true and what is false. God leads each of us in His divine ways toward Him, His Word, and His Wisdom in order to determine that He is very real, and the only means of salvation and eternal life is through accepting and having faith in His Son. It is impossible to determine on our own what truth is, as well as to navigate our purpose and calling in life without the guidance of our Creator. Leadership, for example, is something not everyone is called to, but many desire to be.

The idea of leading people is enticing. There may be a sense of power and pride over such a position, and the ability to influence and change people in all kinds of ways. This, though, is precisely why we must not take up the reigns of leadership unless we are so called by our Heavenly Father. Doing so without His commission could likely result in leading people astray and also taking an opportunity from someone else who is called to lead. Typically when someone without the gift and calling of leadership takes up those reigns they lack the wisdom necessary and end up teaching falsities. Most often it is done out of ignorance and pride, and sometimes from good intentions, but still has negative results.

False teachers and heresy were a serious problem in the church of Ephesus. Timothy was sent to Ephesus by Paul to help the people combat false teachings and establish structure in their church. The letters of Titus and first and second Timothy are Pastoral Epistles authored by Paul to specific individuals, about specific congregations, during a specific period of time, to address specific problems of false teachers becoming more prevalent in their congregations and the need for more structure within their ministries. At this time, the church in Ephesus was without structure and therefore not well equipped to combat these false teachers. Paul sent Timothy, and this letter to Timothy showing his authority to step in and assist the church of Ephesus, to provide structure and clarify correct doctrinal truths to combat the false teachings that were spreading in Ephesus. This letter is intended to assist in combating false teachers in the church of Ephesus.

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 1 Timothy 1:3-8 NIV

We are each responsible for not only seeking after the truth for ourselves but to have an understanding of what the Gospel is in order to combat against what it is not. In order to help equip the church of Ephesus to better discern the difference between true doctrine and false teaching Paul begins his letter by stressing that all are called to Godly living, and addressing some factors of godly gospel living. While Ephesus had specific people causing a specific problem for a specific church, the warning from Paul is just as relevant today. There are false teachers in this world and we must equip ourselves with the knowledge of Truth through submission to God.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-7 ESV

Paul establishes some key factors of Godly living that we should focus on in order to be more wisely equipped against false teachings and to recognize true doctrine better.

Prayer:

There is no one right way to pray, but all people are to pray within their personal relationship with God. Paul is reminding the people of the importance of heartfelt prayer, versus flashy outward appearances in how one prays. It is the heart and intention of prayer that God cares about.

if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Matthew 6:7 ESV

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 ESV

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18 ESV

Meekness and Humility:

We are called to be meek and humble, living as examples of Christ in all we do. The culture in Ephesus promoted flashy attire and outward appearance to show social status or attractiveness, and Paul was reminding them that God cares about inward beauty. We should show meekness and humility, and be dignified and modest so as to not draw attention to our outward appearances.

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:12-13 ESV

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4 ESV

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:18 ESV

Salvation:

God desires all to be saved, but Paul is reminding the people of Ephesus that this requires knowledge (and acceptance) of the Truth, and that they are in danger because of the false teachings being taught.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 ESV

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 ESV

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 ESV

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:17-18 ESV

Modesty:

Modesty by Biblical definition, according to the original Greek, is a sense of honor that seeks to prevent shame, is respectable and has self-control. We can display outward modesty by striving to be honorable to God in our appearance, which is being described here as refraining from flashing material wealth and earthly status, as well as not presenting yourself in such a way to attract attention by your appearances. We should all present ourselves in a manner that shows honor and respect to our bodies as the temple of God.

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 1 Timothy 2:8-10 ESV

Strong’s G2887 - kosmios - ko'-sme-os - respectable: well arranged, seemly, modest.

Strong’s G127 - aidōs - i-do's - propriety: a sense of shame or honour, modesty, bashfulness, reverence, regard for others, respect. Precedes and prevents the shameful act, reflects upon its consequences in the shame it brings with it.

Strong’s G4997 - sōphrosynē - so-fro-sü'-na - moderation: soundness of mind; self-control, sobriety.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Proverbs 31:25-26 ESV

Men and women should both display Biblical modesty and refrain from flashy outward appearances, and instead focus on God and how to honor and glorify Him in all our ways, conduct and appearances. Paul is stating that with proper outward appearance and conduct we are better able to focus on and display godliness by the fruit of the Spirit through good works as the evidence of true faith. True faith is found when it stands on true doctrine and displayed by good works done in the fruits of the Spirit.

Test All Things:

As we strive to adhere to true doctrine we must test all things through the Holy Spirit and check our intentions behind our actions. We should be seeking God’s truth with the intention to follow His truth, no matter how difficult it may be or what we may need to sacrifice in order to adhere to His truth. It is not enough to merely know the truth, we must also intend to follow the truth. The intent of the heart is what we will be judged by, for actions done with the wrong intention are still wrong.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. Matthew 5:21-22 ESV

The people were being led astray from godliness and modest living because of false teachings. We are instructed to test and filter all things through the Word of God to “discern what is the will of God”; to determine whether they line up with the Word of God or not. If any teaching that claims to be Biblical does not line up with the Word of God, it should be considered “of the world” and therefore a false teaching that we should not follow or condone. By failing to test and filter all things through God’s Word, and falling into false teachings, we risk falling away from Truth itself and therefore away from God and the life He calls us to live.

but test everything; hold fast what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 ESV

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 ESV

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

At the time of Paul’s letter to Timothy there were “prophetesses” of Artemis promoting Gnosticism in Ephesus, teaching incorrect doctrine and influencing the women of the church by their teachings. Women of the time were adorning themselves with flashy attire likely to show their social status and material wealth, being influenced by the false teaching, and seemingly attempting to usurp the men’s position of head of the family and leaders of the church. Women of the time often were also less educated than men, and would have had much less teaching and understanding of scripture than men, which would have placed them as less wise in the Word, and more likely to mis-understand, mis-interpret, and mis-teach the Word of God. Widows were also heavily targeted by false teachers because they were so easily persuaded.

Submission:

Paul is striving to harmonize the church with the Creator’s design for home and community. This is a sense of balance between the roles and positions of men and women. Each person is given their roles by God, and men and women have their roles in order to find balance in relationships and leadership. Remember, God made women to be a helper to man, and man was called to love and care for women.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. Genesis 5:1-2 ESV

giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:20-21 ESV

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.' Ephesians 5:22-33 ESV

Strong’s G5293: Submit - hypotássō, hoop-ot-as'-so; to subordinate; reflexively, to obey:—be under obedience, put under, subdue unto, subject, be in subjection, submit self unto.

This use of “submit” is found over 30 times in the New Testament, and is referring to the submissive relationship we are called to have with God out of respect, love and reverence for Him. As a marriage is a representation of the relationship between Christ and His Church, so is this submission between husband and wife - to be subject to Him, obedient to His will, out of love and reverence. This submission is a mutual balance where husband and wife submit one to another, as we are also called within our marriage relationship and individually to submit to Christ. Wives are called to submit all things to their husband’s leadership as the head of the family, as the Church is called to submit all things to the will and leadership of God. Husbands are called to submit themselves to their wife, offering themselves up fully in love for their wife as Christ offered Himself up for the Church, His bride, providing for all her needs and caring for her in all things. This submission is not providing an excuse for abuse, dominance, intolerance, dictatorship, tyrannical treatment, or participation in sin from either husband or wife. It is also not to be mistaken for women not being allowed to participate in decision making, or discouragement for women to express themselves.

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. 1 Timothy 2:11-15 ESV

Paul is saying that the women of Ephesus should learn with quiet respect toward those in authority and teaching positions. This is not saying they should never speak, never lead, or never teach, but is saying they should show respect and meekness as they learn from truthful teachers in Ephesus and reinforces the balance of God’s design.

Strong’s G2271 - hēsychia - ha-sü-khe'-ä - quietly: Quietnes, description of the life of one who stays at home doing his own work, and does not officiously meddle with the affairs of others.

Strong’s G3129 - manthanō - män-thä'-no - learn: to learn, be apprised

  1. to increase one's knowledge, to be increased in knowledge
  2. to hear, be informed
  3. to learn by use and practice
  4. to be in the habit of, accustomed to

Strong’s G5292 - hypotagē - hü-po-tä-ga' - submissiveness: the act of subjecting, obedience, subjection

By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 2 Corinthians 9:13 ESV

to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. Galatians 2:5 ESV

giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:20-21 ESV

Balance:

We should strive for balance according to God’s design for men and women in places of leadership and authority. Within an assembled church, Paul encourages the men of higher education to preside over the church, to teach correct doctrine and display Godly living to the congregation. All are encouraged to respect those placed in positions of authority and strive to learn correct doctrine and refrain from false teachings. We must all recognize that each individual who has a relationship with God will be called by Him according to His purpose, and we must respect and obey how He calls each person to serve Him.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:3-8 ESV

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7 ESV

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Hebrews 13:17 ESV

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14 ESV

But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29 ESV

Service:

We can reference many places in scripture that identify the God-given placement, roles and responsibilities of men, women, and people in general. It is clear throughout scripture that even women were given authority, places of leadership, and honor by God. We are, both men and women, one with Christ, as well as in relationship with fellow believers as the Body of Christ, in the sense of relationship not in sameness of function. Neither men nor women are rewarded based on their roles in God’s Kingdom, but instead based on their faithful obedience to the assignments God has called them to. To God, men and women are of equal value as His creations, but each is functionally different in order for there to be balance in the Kingdom. Men and women can both receive the same spiritual gifts and blessings.

Ephesians 4:11-14 ESV

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 10:42-45 ESV

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Joel 2:28 ESV

When we see Jesus teach in the home of Martha (Luke 10:38-42), Martha was frustrated with her sister Mary for sitting idly to listen to Jesus teach while Martha was hard at work. Martha had a prideful attitude about serving, and was bitter with her sister for prioritizing her time with Jesus. Unfortunately sometimes we serve with a heart not for Jesus but for our own gains and praises through serving and must be careful that we always have a heart and intention to serve and honor Christ in the ways and times He calls us to. The intention of the heart and the attitude of your spirit greatly impacts your ability to live a godly, gospel life.

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, Luke 10:41 ESV

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:9-11 ESV

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13 ESV

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 ESV

And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35 ESV

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. John 12:26 ESV

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24 ESV

We need to continually check our hearts that we are Christ-focused in all our ways, and that our worldly responsibilities do not become a snare and hinder us from serving God. Many times we allow for the duties that we have to become a higher priority in our lives than sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to Him.

Conclusion

As the Bride of Christ, we need to make sure that we do not have our priorities ascue and put worldly things as a higher priority than God. This includes members of our family, our job, and our daily duties. In all our activities, we must live as one fully submitted to Christ and acknowledge Him as our top priority. Paul’s instructions are valuable reminders that God’s design and call for our lives should be prioritized in every way. We must seek Him earnestly, and strive to constantly test to ensure we are adhering to His true doctrine and follow the path He has laid out for us, being watchful of false teachings of the world.

Women of the Word: Faithful Women

Women of the Word: Faithful Women

In the Old Testament, faith was displayed in a variety of people through their true commitment of themselves to God, and unwavering trust in His promises, and a persistent fidelity and obedience. Throughout the New Testament, though, we see not only incredible examples of faithfulness and faithlessness, but also see God’s clear definitions for us.

We can see that faith means more than mere hope, as in the original word ‘aman. This action word appears in the Old Testament more than 100 times and is likened to the action of a child learning to walk, holding on to its parents as it takes wobbly steps. Even with that descriptive definition, the Greek word for faith, pisteuō, is so much clearer in its definition. In Greek, the word places reliance upon Christ for salvation; by extension, the system of the Gospel truth itself.

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Hebrews 11:3 ESV

Strong’s H539 - 'aman - faith: to support, confirm, be faithful

  1. to stand firm, to trust, to be certain, to believe in
  2. stand firm
  3. trust, believe

Strong's G4100 - pisteuō - faith: to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in

  1. in a moral or religious reference
  2. used in the NT of the conviction and trust to which a man is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul
  3. to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith
  4. mere acknowledgment of some fact or event: intellectual faith

The faith found by those in the Old Testament is also forward looking. Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6) and that faith was that the Messiah would come. We see the prophecy of the type of Messiah Jesus would be in Isaiah 53. Paul also wrote a great deal about this forward looking faith, that it was not just for their benefit, but also for our own. We get to see the faithfulness of those who must believe it will be, while we believe that it was.

And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Hebrews 11:39-40 ESV

In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead ( since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Romans 4:18-25 ESV

We can look back and identify the features that set apart those who walked in faith of the promise and see what makes up a Godly man or woman. We find the evidence of faith through the fruit of the Spirit being displayed through their actions and their behaviors.

We read that the Spirit brings love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. We know that those called by God are His chosen ones, holy and beloved, have compassionate hearts, full of humility, meekness, and patience. They are full of forgiveness for others.

We know of many faithful, godly men from throughout the Bible: Noah, Abraham, and David, to name a few. There are also many faithful, godly women found throughout the Bible that may be a little less known than their male counterparts.

We have just started looking into some of those women and have seen how Ruth and Esther were faithful and obedient to God. We have met the woman at the well and the woman with the issue of blood who stepped out in faith and sought after Jesus.

Know Them by Their Fruits

Being able to know and recognize the fruits of the Spirit is an important task that we all need to spend studious time in. These characteristics are the evidence of God in our lives. Our faith, the faith assured in the hope of Jesus, can change us from the inside out.

Paul speaks to us about love, the first listed fruits of the Spirit, giving us the definition of what love is according to God. The greatest of all commandments is to love the LORD your God will all your heart, with all your might, and with all your mind. The second is similar to the first, to love your neighbor as you do yourself. No man hates his own flesh, but rather nourishes and cherishes it, and so should we.

As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ESV

From stepping out in love, we receive the gift of joy from the Holy Spirit. This joy isn’t circumstantial, this joy sustains us through the highs and lows of life. This joy comes not from us, but from the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13 ESV

With that love comes a peace that surpasses human understanding. That peace gives us security in our hope of Christ. Through that peace comes freedom. Freedom from anxiety and worry, freedom from fears that come from insecurities about the future.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 ESV

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 ESV

Patience, the ability for longsuffering, is found while actively waiting for God. This waiting is not sitting still but rather serving God through time spent in the service of others or time spent in His Word. Patience is learning to wait on the LORD, to depend on Him for our needs, and to trust that He does and will supply all that we need.

Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Psalm 27:14

Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James 5:11 ESV

Commitment, faithfulness, trusting, all these attributes point us towards the truth found in God. He is faithful, His words never come back empty. We can be fully confident that God, in His time, in His way, will bring about what is good and righteous for His namesake.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Psalm 37:5 ESV

Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. Isaiah 26:5 ESV

Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. Jeremiah 17:5 ESV

Through our application of faith, we develop traits such as meekness and humility. In humility, we recognize the magnificent power of God and that there are real and direct consequences for disobedience. In our humility we learn to place others' needs above our own and value those around us in a manner that mirrors God’s love for us.

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2 ESV

He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly. Luke 1:52 NKJV

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4 ESV

Through faithfulness to God we learn to trust Him deeper, and apply these beautiful attributes of faithfulness to our lives and relationships, and enact change around us. We must put our faithfulness into action, letting the fruit of the spirit pour out of us into others, planting seeds that lead people closer to Christ. Sometimes our faith can be used to move mountains, sometimes to build bridges, sometimes to stand firm against the winds of change. Whatever seasons life brings with it, faithfulness can keep you centered and focused on the hope we have in Christ and His eternal promises.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 ESV

Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. James 2:20-26 ESV

Sometimes seasons bring hardship, persecution, rejection and slander but true faithfulness is standing firm with the LORD and being unmoved by difficult circumstances. We can easily be swayed by the ebbs and flows of culture and life, but God stays true to His promises to provide, protect and lead us on His path to a better future we could never achieve on our own. Just like Esther becoming queen and being in a position to save an entire nation of Jewish people even at the expense of her own life, we never know when God has placed us right in the middle of a difficult situation for a greater purpose beyond ourselves.

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. Habakkuk 2:4 ESV

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17 ESV

Faithfulness to God comes down to - are you willing to be used by God no matter the personal expense; no matter how uncomfortable or even painful it may get? Are you willing to trust God even in the midst of the worst storm beyond what you could ever imagine and still say and believe that He is still good, and still in control? Beyond this, are you willing to do all these things and still bear God's good fruit, displaying His Spirit, His love, and His truth? This is what defines true faithfulness, from both men and women alike.

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here I am! Send me." Isaiah 6:8 ESV

“...And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14b ESV

Be willing to be used by God with an open, loving heart.

Women of the Word: Godly Woman

Women of the Word: Godly Woman

From the very beginning, God had a design for women. As we embark on this journey through scripture focusing on what God tells and teaches about women, we will set the tone for the whole study by first identifying the characteristics of a Godly woman; a woman of noble character. Through this, we should then understand God’s design a little better, and apply the upcoming studies with more wisdom and discernment.

What characterizes a Godly woman?

You have likely heard that all women should strive to live up to the ideals of the Proverbs 31 Woman. You may also have heard women referenced in regards to the Beatitudes, and how it expands on the qualities women should embody. What you likely have not heard is that these characteristics are not only meant for women. These passages in the Word of God are important for all people, men and women alike, to learn, consider and encourage others to display. This may sound like an extremely bold statement, but hang on with me and let me explain.

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:10-12 ESV

It can be difficult for an unmarried woman to read Proverbs 31 and feel that it is relevant to her. Similar feelings are likely to be expressed by a man, or anyone who has no intention or desire to marry. We must apply Proverbs 31 in relation to the rest of what God tells us. We are the Body of Christ, and as such we are the Bride of Christ, His wife, and He is our husband. All of us are wives to our Lord and Savior. When we accept Christ, we are accepting His proposal of marriage and choosing to enter into this relationship as a submissive wife. Yes, even the men. Yes, I did just say submissive, but hang on, we will get there, too.

For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. Isaiah 54:5 ESV

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, Revelation 21:9-10 ESV

The relationship between God and His people, His Church, is regarded as a marriage relationship where God is the husband and we, His people, are His wife. When God explains a Godly wife, He is speaking to all of us as His bride. God describes His people throughout scripture as His wife, or bride, and Proverbs 31 is identifying the noble character God wants all of us to have as His wife. This is contrasted in scriptures such as Isaiah 54 where God is relating His people to an unfaithful wife. He wants us to understand the difference between being a bride that honors Him and a bride that dishonors Him, and he uses the imagery and place of a woman to explain the place all Christians are called to.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22 ESV

What is an excellent wife?

Through service to her Husband, an excellent wife is trustworthy and faithful, brings peace and goodness into the marriage relationship, and honor to her Husband. This requires the wife to set priorities according to the will of God, not personal passions. We are sinful and selfish from the day sin entered the world and must all learn to cast off our selfishness to put Christ in His rightful place, and thereafter place people in their rightful order according to the will of God in our lives. Because we are naturally selfish, it is far too easy to serve ourselves first and incorrectly prioritize God and other people in our lives.

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.' Proverbs 31:13-31

A Godly wife is hard-working, organized, productive, and should be resourceful and contributing to her family, her community, and the work of God. She uses talents and skills granted from God to serve God and family. She should not idly wait for people to serve her but intentionally seek to serve others. She can be trusted with life decisions, finances, and business ventures, and does it all for the benefit of her family and the glory of God - not for her own benefit and independence. A Godly wife presents herself with dignity, focuses on taking care of home and family, serving God, and caring for her community. She contributes to her family while her husband tends to the greater needs of the family and community.

The Godly wife contributes to, supports and adds to the reputation and success of her husband. As the bride of Christ we are called to contribute, also, to the reputation of God by sharing His truth, love and mercy and bearing His fruit in our lives through faith in Him. Husbands should compliment their wives behind closed doors as well as in public, and we should seek to do what will please God. The fruits of her labors should be recognized publicly as well as privately. She should present herself and speak with wisdom, dignity, and kindness. The Godly wife is God-fearing, God-focused, and God-serving in all she does, and displays the fruits of right priorities and virtues in her relationships.

'giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  • Strong’s G5293: Submit - hypotássō, hoop-ot-as'-so; to subordinate; reflexively, to obey:—be under obedience, put under, subdue unto, subject, be in subjection, submit self unto.

It is also not to be mistaken for women not being allowed to participate in decision making, or a discouragement for women to express themselves.

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:1‭-‬7 ESV

Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ so loves His Church. Wives are called to respect their husband, in awe and reverence for him, just as we as the bride of Christ are called to respect Christ out of love and subjugation to Him. Husband and wife become one flesh and should regard one another in such a manner. We are also called to submit to our husbands, and to Christ, so that through our faith we may bring others to Him. Our faith is not merely for our own benefit, nor is it only an inward experience, but also an outward expression. It is meant to be displayed in all aspects of our character, to shine and share God's truth and light with others, planting seeds that bring them to Him as we strive to live faithfully as His bride; His excellent wife, in all we do.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. Colossians 3:18-25 ESV

  • Strong’s G5399: Respect - phobéō, fob-eh'-o; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:—be afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.

If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1 Corinthians 3:17 ESV

How do these attributes translate to all followers of Christ?

Our culture is jealous, idolatrous, and materialistic and it is too easy to fall into the culture and away from the characteristics God calls on us to display. We must remember that He is the source of salvation, comfort, and all of our needs and that only He is sufficient. Things of this world will never satisfy what we truly long to satisfy. The Beatitudes are commonly applied to women, but should actually be applied to all who follow Jesus. We must dive into practical applications for each Beatitude characteristic focusing on all believers as the Bride of Christ.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2 ESV

All followers of Jesus are called to love God above all, and love people. Our definition of love and what qualifies us as “good” does not compare to God’s definition. We must always look to God’s definition over our own, and seek to live by His Word not the world’s. Through displaying the love of God in our relationships with people we should inherently produce the fruit of the Spirit, which are vital virtues of a Christ follower. These fruits can also be translated into the Beatitudes presented by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount.

Humility

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 ESV

To be blessed in this sense is to happily be of good fortune. This is about recognizing that it is God who blesses and provides, and recognizing that His provisions are sufficient. Being poor in the spirit is to be humble; recognizing our need for God and trusting Him to provide all we need. When we humbly subject ourselves to the rule of Christ, we enter into a salvation relationship with Him and inherit the promise of eternity in Heaven. Subjecting to the rule of Christ includes to subject yourself to His provisions and trust that He truly is sufficient for all your needs.

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26 ESV

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:4 ESV

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 1 Peter 5:6 ESV

Peace

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 ESV

  • Strong’s G3996: Mourn - penthéō, pen-theh'-o; to grieve, wail, grief so all encompassing that cannot be hidden, passionate lamenting.

“Those who mourn” is referring to those who are sensitive and responsive to their sin and compassionate towards others. Mourning here is to mourn a loss of something due to sin. The loss of earthly things due to sin should lead you to mourning and seeking God’s forgiveness and comfort. When we are led to Him through our mourning, it is a blessing because it strengthens our dependence on God, repentance from our sin, and peace in His comfort. God’s peace surpasses understanding and is an incredible comfort in times of mourning and distress. He will be there for us when we are hurting, will forgive us when we sin, and will always lead us back to the right path and strengthen us through the process. We must come to God in our grief because grief that does not lead you back to God will always lead you into darkness, and eventually cause spiritual death.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ESV

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 ESV

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV

Meekness

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 ESV

The meek are those who are gentle and dependent on God rather than themselves. The meek display self-control and submission to God. Meekness equates to humility and recognition that you cannot do it on your own; we all need God in all things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:1-7 ESV

But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. Psalm 37:11 ESV

Faithfulness

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Matthew 5:6 ESV

  • Strong’s G1342: Righteousness - dikaiosýnē, dik-ah-yos-oo'-nay; innocent, holy, righteous, just; righteousness of God; designate the perfect agreement of God’s nature and acts in which He is the standard for all people.

To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to desire to hear and obey the will of God in faithfulness. “Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” are those who long for true righteousness to be evident in their life, but recognize that coming into a relationship with God is the only way to satisfy their hunger and thirst. We must all recognize that only God can satisfy our needs and faithfully submit to His provisions and instructions. We also need to recognize that earthly or material wealth does not equate to the righteousness of God that we yearn for. We cannot be faithful to God if we are leaning on things of the world to satisfy our needs.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. Luke 1:53 ESV

Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Psalm 85:10 ESV

He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?” Psalm 78:20 ESV

The path of the righteous is level; you make level the way of the righteous. Isaiah 26:7 ESV

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22 ESV

Compassion

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Matthew 5:7 ESV

  • Strong’s G1655: Merciful - eleḗmōn, el-eh-ay'-mone; actively compassionate; of Christ as a High Priest, and those who are like God.

The merciful are those who are compassionate toward the needs of others and, out of faith, work to meet those needs. Mercy that is shown to others will also be shown to us. God gives us all that we have, even and especially our salvation through the blood of His Son, and commands us to have mercy for others as He has with us. All of us sin and fall short of the glory of God; all of us struggle. If God has mercy for us, how could we possibly think we have any right to withhold mercy for others? None of us deserve mercy, but He gives it and commands it anyway.

And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. Luke 1:58 ESV

For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:13 ESV

And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you? Matthew 18:33 ESV

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Jude 1:20-23 ESV

Holiness

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8 ESV

  • Strong’s G2513: pure - katharós, kath-ar-os - Clean, clear, pure; free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt in reference to the heart.
  • Strong’s G2588: heart - kardía, kar-dee'-ah - The heart; figuratively, thoughts or feelings; mind; the outward, outpouring of one's inner self; the seat of the soul.

“Those who are pure in heart” live a lifestyle of holiness, set apart and different from the world, including in thoughts and actions. Being pure in heart means you are intentionally pursuing purity in all areas of life. In order to be in a right relationship with God we must seek to lead a lifestyle of purity, constantly repenting and seeking for God to clean the darkness, brokenness and sin from our lives, softening our hearts to Him and His will. We all miss the mark constantly, but must live with holy intentions and a heart of repentance when we slip in order for God to purify us once again.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 ESV

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Psalm 24:4-6 ESV

Forgiveness

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9 ESV

  • Strong’s G1518: Peacemakers - eirēnopoiós, i-ray-nop-oy-os; subjectively peaceable, loving peace, pacific.

Peacemakers are those who seek reconciliation, forgiveness, forbearance, and restoration of fellowship. They are those that strive to live a quiet life and be in fellowship with those around them. This includes being full of forgiveness and grace for those who have done wrong. When conflict arises, the peacemakers are those who are able to remain peaceable and level-headed with a heart of forgiveness, and also quickly recognize and repent for their own wrongs.

Whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. Romans 3:25 ESV

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:18 ESV

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 ESV

To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. Titus 3:2 ESV

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 ESV

Self-Control

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Matthew 5:10-11 ESV

To be persecuted for righteousness' sake means that your loyalty and commitment to God can not be broken even while being treated wrongly because of your faith. Patience and self-control are needed to willingly endure suffering and persecution. Being persecuted for standing firm with Christ is a blessing because He is being glorified and honored through our suffering, and our faith is being strengthened and used as a light for His good.

There is variation in degrees that people will face during persecution and there will be those who are under immense pressure and hostility. As much as we rejoice in persecution for ourselves, we also must be lifting up others who are going through their own persecution and not fearing, condemning, or judging one another's levels, intentions or even reactions to persecution. We must have the self-control to remain faithful and peaceable in our own persecution and as a response to the persecution of others.

So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:15-17 ESV

Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3 ESV

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 2 Timothy 3:12 ESV

1 Peter 4:12-14 ESV

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Romans 12:14 ESV

If we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 2 Timothy 2:12 ESV

And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:22 ESV

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10 ESV

And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. Mark 4:17 ESV

Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. 1 Peter 4:19 ESV

Strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. Acts 14:22 ESV

Patience

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:12 ESV

  • Strong’s G5463: Rejoice - chaírō, khah'-ee-ro - To be cheerful, calmly happy or well-off, glad, joyful; in reference to the prospect of reward.
  • Strong’s G21: - be exceeding glad - agalliáō, ag-al-lee-ah'-o - to exult, rejoice exceedingly, be exceeding glad.

Our real rewards are awaiting us in heaven and while we should appreciate the earthly blessings we are provided we should not dwell or focus on earthly things. We should rejoice over every reward we receive from God and patiently await the promise of the rewards yet to come. These rewards that we will receive will be given when believers stand before Christ and we will take those crowns that we will be given and lay them down at the feet of Jesus.

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. John 15:18 ESV

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:19-24 ESV

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 ESV

they cast their crowns before the throne… Revelation 4:10b ESV

Conclusion

All of us, as the Bride of Christ, are called to live by the example of the Proverbs 31 Woman; the Excellent, Godly Wife. We must all recognize our position in our relationship with Christ and submit ourselves to His headship as wives are likewise called to submit to their husbands. We can trust Christ in the role of our husband and should likewise be trusted in the role of His wife. As such, we must recognize and live with the intention to become the bride He calls on us to be for Him, and display these attributes in our relationship with Him, in fellowship with others, and in all areas of our lives out of faith, love and reverence for Him.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7 ESV

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween may seem like a fun holiday where kids get to dress up and enjoy a ton of free candy, and we all get an excuse to have creative fun with family and friends. There is a lot more to the holiday than this, though. Should Christians join in the celebration of Halloween? In order to answer this question it is important to know what Halloween really is and where it came from.

What is Halloween?

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is a holiday celebrated annually on October, 31, the night before All Saints’ Day. It has ancient Celtic (or Druid) origins, specifically to the festival of Samhain (“sow-win”). The Samhain Festival celebrated the start of Winter and the bringing in of the herds, and it was believed that with the herds came the dead to visit their homes. It was a massive celebration filled with bonfires, costumes, games and “fortune telling”. Festival celebrants believed that during the festival the spirit and physical worlds could essentially intermingle, allowing the living to interact with the dead. They eventually began to leave gifts for entities they believed would visit from the spirit world, such as fairies and ghosts, and dressed up as monsters and animals to disguise themselves and prevent kidnapping by these spirits. The Samhain Festival eventually evolved further and included more creative additions such as jack-o-lanterns.

When a majority of the Celtic territories were conquered by the Roman Empire in 53 A.D., the Romans merged the Feralia Festival, a similar festival where the Romans honored their dead, and another day dedicated to Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees, with the Samhain Festival. In 609 A.D., both the Catholic church and the Western church established holidays to honor Christian Martyrs. Later, in what may have been an attempt by the Christian churches to replace the original Samhain, All Souls’ Day was made for Christians to honor their dead.

The church did not do away with the original traditions when they created All Souls’ Day, also known as All Saints’ Day, but instead embraced them for their purposes. All Hallows’ Eve, the evening prior to All Saints’ Day, was then designated as a holy, or hallowed, eve by the church. This is where the name Halloween stems from. During the Reformation All Saints’ Day ceased to be celebrated by Protestants, and eventually Halloween became a secular holiday.

As a secular holiday, Halloween has become known for things like costumes, candy, trick-or-treating, pranks, and parties. We associate black cats, pumpkins, ghosts and ghouls with the holiday, and many families have a blast carving jack-o-lanterns and decking themselves or their kids out in creative costumes. It is widely known as well for being a scary holiday with haunted houses, horror movies, and lots of darkness.

Halloween certainly has some mixed history, which even includes church participation, both historically and to this day as churches host events such as trunk-or-treats. Does this make it okay for Christians to celebrate?

What does the Bible say?

As with all things, we must look to the Word of God. As we look to scripture there are some lines that God has clearly drawn in regards to the occult and their practices and we need to always be mindful of the warnings that God gives us; warnings are in place for our safety.

There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord; and because of these detestable things the Lord your God will drive them out before you.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 NASB

Strong's H7081 - qecem - divination, witchcraft

Strong's H6049 - `anan - (Poel) to practice soothsaying, conjure

  • to observe times, practice soothsaying or spiritism or magic or augury or witchcraft
  • soothsayer, enchanter, sorceress, diviner, fortuneteller, barbarian, Meonenim (participle)

Strong's H5172 - nachash - to practice divination, divine, observe signs, learn by experience, diligently observe, practice fortune telling, take as an omen

  • to practice divination
  • to observe the signs or omens

Strong's H3784 - kashaph - (Piel) to practice witchcraft or sorcery, use witchcraft

  • sorcerer, sorceress (participle)

Strong's H3049 - yidd?`oniy - a knower, one who has a familiar spirit

  • a familiar spirit, soothsayer, necromancer (meton)

Divination, or the act of “foretelling future events, or discovering things secret by the aid of superior being, or other than human means.” as stated by the Smith’s Bible Dictionary is specifically defined and Easton’s Bible Dictionary points that every type and degree of this superstition was explicitly forbidden by the law of Moses.

You shall not permit a sorceress to live. Exodus 22:18 ESV

Strong's H3784 - kashaph - (Piel) to practice witchcraft or sorcery, use witchcraft

‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor practice divination or soothsaying. Leviticus 19:26 NASB

Strong's H5172 - nachash - to practice divination, divine, observe signs, learn by experience, diligently observe, practice fortune telling, take as an omen

  • to practice divination
  • to observe the signs or omens

Strong's H6049 - `anan - (Poel) to practice soothsaying, conjure

  • to observe times, practice soothsaying or spiritism or magic or augury or witchcraft
  • soothsayer, enchanter, sorceress, diviner, fortuneteller, barbarian, Meonenim (participle)

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:31 ESV

Strong's H178 - 'owb - necromancer

  • necromancer, one who evokes the dead
  • ghost, spirit of a dead one
  • practice of necromancy

Strong's H3049 - yidd?`oniy - a knower, one who has a familiar spirit

  • a familiar spirit, soothsayer, necromancer (meton)

What does the occult have to do with Halloween?

There is a clear line that God has drawn in the sand: we do not practice the occult - matters regarding the action or influence of the supernatural. We are not to participate in their practices as they are of the world, but we are not of the world as we have been reborn in Christ Jesus. The New Testament continues these warnings:

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Galatians 5:16-24 ESV

Strong's G5331 - pharmakeia - sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it

Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,

Ephesians 5:7-13 ESV

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Revelation 21:8 ESV

Strong's G5333 - pharmakos - pertaining to magical arts

There is clearly an aspect of Halloween that is not permissible by God’s commands, which He has clearly laid out in scripture.

Modern Day Halloween

With its dark history, it’s no wonder the debate over should Christians participate in Halloween has been ongoing. While those dark pasts still linger and should be watched for, many in the culture today no longer associate the holiday with its roots. The holiday has taken on a new dynamic in the past few decades. Today, the holiday focuses on children dressing up in all kinds of costumes, and sugar overdoses from all the candy.

Schools have adapted to a Fall Festival where all the fun aspects of Halloween are in place: lots of candy, costumes, and games. Students are encouraged to dress up like their favorite animal or superhero. Activities like bobbing for apples no longer show worship to a Greek goddess; they are simply for fun.

With the changing of traditions, churches have an open door to interact with the world in a neutral way that has the potential to reach thousands. Churches around the country are taking that advantage and using “trunk-or-treating” and other such events as a way to get in touch with people that typically wouldn’t be on church grounds.

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.

Mark 16:15 ESV

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:20 ESV

Should Christians participate in Halloween?

We have an opportunity, as the body of Christ, to use Halloween as a stepping stone and an extended hand to those that are outside the Body of Christ. We are to remember that while we are not to be aligned to the world, we are still involved in it and we have been told to spread the gospel to everyone.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2 ESV

Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:15-16 ESV

Participation in Halloween, no matter the degree, needs to be taken seriously. There will be those who are convicted to refrain from participation completely, and that is okay. There will also be those who will enjoy the fun side of Halloween, and that is also okay. What is important is that we do not cause those around us to fall into the dark side that lurks in the shadows of the holiday.

To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

1 Corinthians 9:20-23 ESV

Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. Romans 14:13-14 ESV

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.

1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV

Conclusion

Whether you are pro-Halloween or not, the most important thing to remember is that as members of the Body of Christ we need to be respectful and informed about the choices we make. What may be a difficult challenge for one may be easily overcome by another. As Paul reminds us, the most important thing is to not cause those around to stumble with sin.

Halloween can be used to honor God if done right, but can also easily be used for the opposite purpose which is where the danger zone lies in wait. As with anything, we as Christians are called to test all things according to the Word of God; use scripture as a filter for everything, obey God’s boundaries and instructions for you, and respect that God will give each person boundaries and instructions.

It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.

Romans 14:21 ESV

So, should Christians celebrate Halloween? Bring it to God, do your research, and obey whatever God leads you to. What God tells you may differ from what he tells someone else, as we all have our own struggles and stumbling blocks, but remember to honor God in all you do. Make God your focus and priority, and do all that you do for the glory of God and furtherance of His love and Truth.

'Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.'

Colossians 3:23-25 ESV

'We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. '

1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 ESV

Warning Signs: Don’t Reject the Heavenly Voice

Warning Signs: Don’t Reject the Heavenly Voice

One of the most debated topics I see within the Church is if and how we can hear the heavenly voice of God speaking to us. There are so many different answers given to this question, but there is one unanimous answer we can and should all agree on. God speaks to us through His Word.

Throughout this entire study series, we have learned many incredibly important reasons to be constantly diving deep into God’s Word. Scripture reinforces again and again that Christ is superior to all things because He is our righteous Creator, Sustainer, Controller, Provider, and Judge. We also strengthen our personal relationship and ability to recognize His voice and work through accepting Jesus and His salvation, and placing Him as superior over our lives, entering His rest, repenting of our sins, and acknowledging the beautiful gift of God’s grace by which we are offered all of these.

Each of these steps is vital to our personal relationships with Jesus, and to our ability to hear the Heavenly voice. Through recognizing Him in our lives we are better able to learn, grow, and discern His path and callings for us. It is also our individual responsibility to learn to recognize and obey His voice.

We have each been called into a mission for the betterment of the Kingdom and each person has been called to their unique tasks. We must follow Christ no matter the difficulty, no matter the struggle, no matter the sacrifice. Wherever He calls, wherever He leads, there we must go.

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

1 Corinthians 1:26-29 ESV

Don’t Reject Christ’s Superiority

So, how do we hear the Heavenly voice? The first step is to put Christ in His rightful place in our lives. Christ's rightful place is the most superior position in our lives, our top priority and focus, our go-to, our trusted Lord and Saviour, our Good Shepherd. When we put Him first, we have our hearts set on Him and live intentionally for Him, in love and obedience. He is our example and we strive to live as Christ and chase after Him above all else.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Romans 1:20 ESV

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Hebrews 1:1-2 ESV

"We are all called to come to Him, enter into the blessing of a relationship with our Creator, and place Him in His rightful place as righteous ruler of our lives. Through this, we will find rest for our souls and be made whole with His love. Come to the life-giving waters and drink. Refresh your spirit and be made whole in Him who died to save you and rose again as our Holy and righteous Lord." (Superiority)

Don’t Reject Your Salvation

Our second step is one of action. We are to accept the salvation that God has provided to us through our faith and trust in Jesus. God gives each of us a personal mission and instructions for how we are to rely on Him in all things and not allow for the world to pull us away, causing us to drift from Christ and neglect our salvation. Having a strong prayer life, constant heartfelt time in His Word, and learning to grow with His people in fellowship is how we should spend every day. We must intentionally seek to learn and grow in becoming more like Him.

'For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” '

Romans 10:13 ESV

'So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. '

Romans 6:11 ESV

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:2 ESV

'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. '

Romans 1:16 ESV

We are called to “pick up our cross and follow after Christ” (Luke 14:26-28), meaning we must follow Christ in all things, knowing that there will be a personal cost paid sometimes but no matter how hard it gets we must continue on in faith, following Him no matter what, no matter how hard it gets, no matter who we lose in order to gain a relationship with Him who is greater than and Ruler of all things. (Salvation)

Don’t Reject Christ

While we take action, to hear the heavenly voice we need to ensure that our eyes are on Christ at all times and that in all ways we emulate Him. Christ came, not to condemn the world, but to save it and we must learn to treat those who may think or behave differently with the same love, mercy, and compassion that Christ has shown us. It is not a simple phrase to be said but rather an action of love that calls us to fellowship with others.

As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 4:29 ESV

Jesus sets the example for us. He fellowshipped with His followers daily. He taught them, loved them, was patient with them, and Jesus approached different people in unique ways that spoke to them and drew them near to Him and the Father. When questions were asked, He didn’t scream at them, point fingers, call names, act cruelly, or even try to force people to believe Him - even in His anger, He acted righteously and justly, and His anger was always as a reaction to sin. (Christ)

Don’t Reject Christ’s Rest

While we diligently seek Him, we need to be recognizing and resting in all the ways which Christ has shown us, and to listen to His heavenly voice. Learning to discipline yourself also means learning to stay when God says to wait. This is not an inactive time but rather a diligent and earnest time spent seeking Him through prayer and through His word. We need to rest in Him and stay in His perfect peace even when life is filled with storms and stay focused on His path. We need to trust that when God calls us to be still, that it is what is best and is worth the time, worth the correction, and worth the painful process.

'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.'

Psalm 23:1-6

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 ESV

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Mark 2:27 ESV

He calls on us to come to Him, bring our burdens, cares, worries, concerns and questions to Him so that He will give us His rest in return. He wants to lighten our load. He wants us to trust Him with our problems and praises. He wants us to give Him our sins and our shame and replace them with peace and rejuvenation through His forgiveness and salvation. We are not good on our own, and we need to intentionally come back to Him over and over again to be restored, to clean out the gunk in our hearts, chip away the hardened spots, and soften us once again to His will and love. (Christ’s Rest)

Don’t Sin Willingly

Sin - a three-letter word. Sin is to miss the mark, and 1 John 5:17 says all wrongdoing is sin. We must recognize what God commands of us and we learn this by spending time in fervent prayer and in studious time spent in His word. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, says Romans 3:23. Humans caused sin to enter the world but God has made the Way for us to be reconciled to Him and that is through Christ Jesus and Christ alone. Through this redemption, we are able to hear His heavenly voice, and by His power resist sin and temptation.

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.

John 8:34 ESV

Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

James 1:15 ESV

'because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” '

Romans 10:9-11 ESV

'Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”'

Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV

Throughout scripture, we are given many further instructions in how to live the way God expects us to, primarily being called to live as Christ as our example. If we love God the way He calls us to, accept His Son and His salvation, truly repent of our sin, and commit to live our lives for Him, God will forgive us and bless us with the gift of His Spirit. We are washed clean of our sins and the power it once had over us is broken, and His Spirit dwells in us to serve as a guide in living according to the will of God. (Don’t Sin Willingly)

Don’t Reject God’s Grace

It is important that we know and understand that while we are sinners who deserve punishment for our sins, we were created by God, for God, and we constantly sin against Him. God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). He sent His Son to take our place and the punishment that we deserved because of His great love and His desire to have us restored to Him. This is the grace of God.

The grace of God can be defined by several different aspects of who He is and what He does and provides for us. His grace is His favor, kindness, and friendship offered to us, as well as His forgiving mercy. He displays His grace through the gifts He gives to us, which include His call for us to display Christ’s virtues and bear His good fruit. God also displays his grace through giving us His Law and then fulfilling the Law through the gospel of Christ.

Learning to recognize His heavenly voice and appreciate the grace of God is a vital part of learning to recognize the Heavenly voice. It is by His grace that we have the opportunity to receive His gift of salvation, and then receive the Holy Spirit and be guided by the Heavenly voice.

“O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.

Genesis 18:3 ESV

But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

Romans 11:6 ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV

Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

Galatians 5:2-6 ESV

'yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Galatians 2:16 ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:13-16 ESV

In all these things, God speaks to us. In all these mercies and grace, God speaks to us. We must open our hearts to Him, accept His Son and the salvation He died to give us, and through this we come into relationship with our Heavenly Father, receive His Holy Spirit, and are guided by the Heavenly voice in our lives. It can be challenging to understand what it means for God to speak to us, but through building a personal relationship with Him with Christ as your focus and foundation we begin to recognize His voice and work in our lives and the world around us.

Hearing the Heavenly voice is a personal experience, unique to each person and their relationship with God. To hear Him better, to recognize Him, spend time with Him in earnest prayer and fervent study of His Word, as well as in fellowship with His people, and you will begin to experience Him, His love and grace, on a new and growing level every day.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
